SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,747, dated May 4, 1897.

Be itknown that I, RICHARD MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Berlin, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvem ents in Harness-Saddletrees5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section showing the different parts placed in proper position. Eig. isa transverse section through line X X, Eig. l, except that the full widths of the different bars and straps are illustrated. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the back-band eye. Fig. 4 is a detached View of the upper saddletree piece or plate. Fig. 5 is a detached view of the under saddletree piece or plate. Fig. 6 is a detached View of the plate-spacing block. Fig. 7 is a sectional View through line Y Y, Eig. l, except a Vfull transverse section is shown.

The present invention has relation to harness-saddletrees; and it consists in the difterent parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures ot' the drawings.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the upper saddletree piece or plate, which is located with reference to the dill'erent parts substantially as illustrated in Fig. l and is formed of spring or flexible material throughout its entire length and is so formed for the purpose hereinafter described.

The under saddletree piece or plate B is substantially of the form shown in Fig. 5 and is formed of spring or flexible material throughout its entire length.

For the purpose of properly spacing the saddletree-pieces A and I3 at their tops the backband eye O and the spacing-block D are placed between the saddletree-pieces, substantially as illustrated in Eig. 7, and for the purpose of maintaining the flexibility of the saddletree-pieces A and B throughout their entire length and at the same time providing a central opening the parts O and I) are set or placed but a short distance upon the sides of the saddletree-pieces A and Bthat is to say, said parts are extended only a short distance between the saddletree-pieces.

The seat E and the rein-hook E are attached by means of suitable clamping-bolts, such as a and Z) or their equivalents, in the ordinary manner and may be of any desired style, inasmuch as they form no particular part ot' the present invention, except that they must be used in connection with my improvement to carry out the full purpose of the harnesssaddle proper. It will be understood that by forming the saddletree-piece A flexible throughout its entire length there will be no rigid portion to interfere with the animal, and at the same time the harness saddle proper will at all times yield, so as to conform with the curvature of the animals back.

In the event a single saddletree piece or plate is used in the formation of a saddle proper the terrets are attached to the single saddletree-piece in the ordinary manner and the supporting-straps secured to the saddletree-piece by passing the shanks of the terrets through the su pporting straps, after which the screw-threaded nuts are placed in their proper positions, so as to come upon the under faces of the supporting-straps.

The terrets G are provided with the ordinary screw-threaded shanks c, which screwthreaded shanks receive ordinary screwthreaded nuts, said terrets being attached to the upper saddletree-piece A, substantially as illustrated in Fig. l. The supporting-strap lfl is located between the saddletree pieces or plates A and B and extends over and under said saddletree-pieces and is preferably formed of one continuous piece.

It will be understood that the supportingstra p II can be adjusted longitudinally, thereby pro\fiding for the proper adjustment in attaching the parts designed to be connected with said supporting-strap.

For the purpose of preventing any lateral displacement of the su pporting-strap it is extended or placed between the back-band eye C and the spacing-block D.

It will be understood that the ordinary jockey and the covering for the necessary padding are to be connected in the ordinary saddletree-pieces A and B, formed of :flexible material throughout their entire length, the back-band eye C, and the spacing-block D, located between the saddletree-pieces, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
