Applicaton illed August 20, 1889. Serial No 321,389. (No model.)
T0 (LZZ w7wm 23 may concern: A represents the rotary head described in Beitknown thatl, FREEBORN F. RAYMOND, said application. The arms a carry the de- 2d, a citizen of the United States, residing at vice for driving the heel-attaching nails. Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State Each arn1 B carries the top-lift centering and of Massachusetts, have invented a new and spanking device and mechanism for driving useful Improvement in Heel- Nailing Ma the nails through the top lift. Each device chines, of which the following is a full, clear, comprises the plate or block b, having the and exact description, reference being had to holes I), the circular driverholcling block 19 the accompanying drawings, forming a part and the drivers b secured thereto and ex- 10 of this specification, in explaining its nature. tending into the holes Z) of the block 12. The
The invention is an improvement upon t-hat driver-bleek 6 is secured to another block b, described in my application for Letters Patin which there is a dovetail recess b", or the ent of the United States filed August 17, 1889, blocks Z2 b maybe made integral. The bloek Serial No. 321,158, and it relates especally to 11 is also circular, and upon the blocks b b [5 the top-lift spanker and devices for driving there is arranged a thick sleeve C. It has a an additional gang or group of nails through cylindrieal hole to fit the blocks b (2 and the ihe top lift. It is desirable that thereloe prostraight edges c. It is united to the bl0ck b visionfor the adjusting of the top lift horiby side plates c. Each arm B has the dovezontally or back and forth in relation to a tail tongue b upon which the dovetail block zo given breast-line for the pnrpose of enabling b fits, and the bl0ck 11 and part-s earried the same top lift te be applied to a nurnber thereby are horizontally adj us'table 11p011 this of nails driven in different orders or by difdovetail. The block is fastened in any posiferent prickings, and when additional nails tion thereon by means of the set-screw 19 The are to be driven through the top lift it is demovement of the sleeve C upon the blocks b b 2 5 sirable that the nail-holes loear the same reis limited by one 01 more pins b whieh enter lation continuonsly to the edge of the top lift. slots b formed in the sleeve. Each 2t1111 B is surronnded by a spring whicl1 bears against a collar that slides therc on, the outward movement of the collar being lin1ited bysnitable stops, and in nse, upon the reciprocation of the head, the arm or top lift comes in contact with the heel, stopping the plate 1). Having thns fully described my invcntion, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The co1nbinaton, in 1 heel-naling machine, of the following instrumentalities, "iz: a snpporting arm 01 head, fl top-lift spanker and nailing device consisting of a driver holding-block, L sleeve movable on said block, a perforated spankerblock, drivers CIJIGC1 by sztd driver holding-131001: and entering said perforatons,a [oplift helder coperztti n g With the spanker during the driwing operation, and arms or plates connecting said movable sleeve Tld the spankerplate subs'tantially as de scribed.
2. The combination, with a perforated spanker-block, of a top-lift helder carried thereby and coperating thcrewith, a driver bleek carried thereby and profided with a gang of drivers, means for securing the block to & holding arn1 or head so as that it shall be horizontally adjnstzrble thereon zr sliding slceve n1ounted on said blockand connections between said sleeve and spanker-block, substantially as dcscribed.
In a heelattaching machine, 21 supporting arm 01 l1ead, in combnation With EL combined removable top-lift spanker and naildriver, consisting of L driver-block, a gang of drivers carried thereby,a perforated spankerblock movzrbly secured to s2tid driverblock and movable with relation to srid drivers, and t top-lift helder carried by said spanker-lolock and copemtng therewth, substantztlly as described.
4. The combination of the t11n having the spring and collm and dovetail tongue with the driver holdcr-block having zr dovctail recess and a set-screw, drivers cztrried thereby, t spankenblock having holes 1), the toplift helder carried by seid spztnkerblock, and a sliding connection uniting the spanker-block and he driver holder-block, substant-ially as described.
5. The combination in a heel-nailing nmchineof {L co1nbin ed remowrble spnnkerblock en d nailholder comprising the platte f lmving nail-receiving holes 1) and ZL top-lift holding aud centcring device u pon one snrface thcrcof, as and for the purposes described.
