FREDERICK R. GOTTSCIIALK, OF BLUFFTON, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- IIALF TO FERDINAND EFFINGER, OF SAME PLACE.v
FODDEREBINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581 ,394, dated April 27, 1897.
Application filedOctober 10, 1896. Serial No. 608,477. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK R. GOTT- SCHALK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bluffton, in the county of lVells and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Fodder-Binders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in fodder-binders in which the fodder is compressed by levers and held co mpressed until suitably tied; and the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter described,
pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
The drawing shows a cross-section taken through the center of a table and between the two beams to which the compressing-levers are pivoted, the legs and other portions of the table being omitted for clearness of view.
Similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts. 1
0 In the drawing, 2 is a curved lever which is pivoted and fulcrumed on one of the crossbealns 9 of the table-frame, its lower end being extended and provided with a frictionwheel 5. The other compressing-lever 6 is provided on its upper end with notches 7, which are engaged by a pawl 4, attached to the lever 2, for the purpose of holding the levers in position when clamping the bundle of fodder. The other end of the lever 6 is provided with a straight looped end 8, in which the wheel 5 of the lever 2 moves and operates the arm or lever 6. The bundle is placed in the space 10 between the two levers and on top of the table. The lower end of 4 5 the lever 2 is preferably bifurcated vertically, so that the wheel 5 can be pivoted between the bifurcated ends. Oneof the bifurcated ends is broken away in the drawing to better show the construction. Both compressinglevers 2 and 6 have their upper ends suitably curved to compress the bundle of fodder placed between. The construction provides that they shall be simultaneously operated by means of the handle 3, whereby the compression is uniform on both sides and top of the bundle.
The arrangement for the operation of the looped end lever 6 by the other one withfriction-wheel renders the device of easier operation, and the part of applying the power to the looped end lever 6 increases in distance from the fulcrum as the pressure on the bundle is increased, giving increased effect to the compressing-arm.
The mode of operation is obvious from the 6 5- drawing and description. When the upper arms of the levers 2 and 6 are opened, by raising the handle 3 the bundle is placed in the space 10 between them. The lever 2 is then drawn down upon the fodder, and by the connection of its lower arm and frictionwheel 5 with the looped end of the lever 6 the upper end of the lever 6 is forced against and down upon the bundle simultaneously with the movement of the lever 2, and the pawl 4, operating in the catches 7, holds them in place at any desired point of compression. The bundle is then tied. with a string or twine in the usual manner.
I have not illustrated the twine or its connection with the levers, as such construction is well understood by those skilled in the art.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a fodder-binder attached to a table or other support, a lever carrying a rollerwheel at its end adapted to move in a slotted bearing on the end of the other compressinglever and operate it simultaneously, in combination withan opposite lever provided with a slotted bearing on its lower end and adapted to be operated by the movement of the said lever carrying the roller.
2. In a fodder-binder the combination of a cross-beam forming part of the table or other support; a compressing-lever provided with a friction-wheel at its lower end and a handle at its upper end, and pivoted to said crossbeam at one side thereof; an opposite compressing-lever pivoted to the other side of shell compress equally and simultaneously said cross-beam and provided with EL slotted With each other. 10 end adapted to receive and hold movably the In testimony whereof I affix my signature roller on the other end of the compressingin presence of two Witnesses.
