FRANCIS BLAKE, OF WESTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
LABEL FOR TREES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,221, dated April 20, 1897.
7 Application filed June 1,1895. Serial No. 551,355. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS BLAKE, of Veston, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Labels for Trees, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to prevent the bark of the tree as the tree grows from crowding the label from its support. To accomplish this, instead of nailing the label to the tree in the ordinary manner I cause it to be held against the tree by a nail partially driven into the tree through ahole in the label enough larger than the diameter of the nail to make a loose fit, and a spring-clasp'secured to the nail close up to the front of the label by virtue of its own elasticity, which, however, is sufficiently yielding to allow a motion to the spring-clasp and label along the nail longitudinally as the tree grows and presses the label outward.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents the label, nail, and spring as they appear in the practice of the invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are detached views of the nail and spring.
The nail is lettered a, the spring-clasp b, and the label 0. v
The label is made of sheet-zinc or any suitable material, and "the exact form of the spring-clasp is not essential, provided it has a sufficiently-yielding movement, as described. It is also obvious that within my invention the label and spring-clasp may be formed in one piece or that the label may be attached to the clasp in any manner and the W. W. SWAN, ,IDA E. HANDREN.
