Description

Patented Apr. 20, 1897..
G; DEWEE'SE. SWINGING GATE (NoModeL) WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
CHARLES DEWEESE, OF FLETCHER, INDIANA.
swlueme GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,850, dated April 20, 1897. Application filed October 22, 1896. $erial No. 609,638. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Dnwnnsn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fletcher, in the county of Fulton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swinging Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a novel construction in a gate and means for operating the same, the object being to provide a construction of this kind whereby the gate can be operated by a person on horseback or in a vehicle before arriving at the gate and can be closed after passing therethrough without alighting.
The invention consists of the features of construction hereinafter described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating this invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the gate and its operating mechanism. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the latch.
Referring now to said drawings, 1 indicates a gate, 2 its hinge-post, and 3 its latch-post. Said gate is hinged to the post 2 in the usual manner and is provided at its outer end with a spring-latch 4 to engage a catch 5 on said post 3. The said catch 4 extends above the upper rail of the gate and is connected by means of the rod 6 with one arm of a bellcrank lever 7, pivoted to the upper rail of the gate near the hinge thereof. The other end of this bell-crank lever 7 is connected at the forward end of a lever 8, that is pivoted to the upper end of the hinge-post 2. The forward end of the lever S is provided with a downwardly-projecting pin 9, situated within a slot in the gate, preferably made by a wire loop 10, extending laterally from the upper rail thereof.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that between the forward end of the lever 8 and the gate is a little lost motion. On either side of the hinge-post 2 are lever-posts 11, to the upper end of which are connected the levers 12, which are themselves connected with the outer end of the lever 8 by means of the rods 13.
The parts being constructed and arranged as above described, the gate can be operated in the following manner: We will suppose, for instance, that the gate is to be operated from the right-hand approach, and it will be seen that by forcing the levers 12 toward the hinge-post the inner end of the lever 8 is moved away from the upper rail of the gate, which has the eifect first of swinging the bell-crank lever 7 upon its pivot and retracting the lever 4 from the catch 5 to permit the gate to swing. When this operation is completed, the pin 9 of the lever 8 strikes the loop 10 and causes the gate to swing in an obvious manner. It is apparent that after the gate is swung to an open position in this manner it can be closed by means of the levers 12 being moved to cause the lever 8 to be moved in the opposite direction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a hinge-post, of a gate, a spring-latch carried thereby, a latchpost and catch, a lever 8 pivoted upon said hinge-post, a downwardly-extending projection upon the end of said lever 8, a slot in said gate to receive said projection, said slot being wider than the projection, a bell-crank lever pivoted upon said gate and engaging at its opposite ends with the lever 8 and with said spring-latch, and operating-levers on opposite sides of the gate connected with said lever 8, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES DEIVEESE.
