Description

W- H- H1 WEST.
Q Hi ses (N0 Model.)
Uff/M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. H. WEST, OF J ERSEYVILLE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF TWO- THIRDS TO H. S. DANIELS AND J. W. ENOS, OF SAME PLACE.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 580,812, dated April 13, 1897.
Application filed July l15, 1896.
To @ZZ whom it may conocida Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. H. WEST, a citizen of the United States, residing at J erseyville, in the county of Jersey and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Fence-Post, of which the following is a speci- Iication.
The invention relates to improvements in fence-posts.
The. object of the present invention is to improve the construction of fence-postsand to provide a simple, strong, and durable one which will be comparatively inexpensive in construction, capable of being firmly anchored in the ground, and adapted to receive readily a series of fence-wires.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l1 is a perspective view of a fence-post constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the cap of the post.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
l designates a base provided'with horizontal arms 2, extending diametrically from the center of the base and disposed at right angles to each other. The base is provided with a central vertically-disposed support- 3 and has webs or flanges 4, disposed longitudinally of the arms and formed integral with the same and the support. The support has its upper portion 5 reduced to form a tapering projection or plug and a horizontal shoulder at the bottom thereof. The tapering reduced upper portion 5 of the support 3 fits into the lower end of a tubular fence-post 6, which is mounted upon the base and which is retained on the central support by inclined braces 7, extending upward from the outer ends of the arms and secured at their upper terminals to the post. The flanges 4 of the base are provided at their outer ends with perforations 8, and the lower ends of the braces are angularly bent to form hooks 9, which are engaged Serial No. 5 99,331. (No model.)
with the perforations. The upper ends of the braces are provided with eyes and are secured tothe fence-post by fastening devices l0, each fastening device passing through the eyes of two of the braces.
The tubular fence-post is providedat intervals with horizontal slots ll, communicating with the interior or bore of the post and receiving fence-wires l2,which are crimped adjacent to the post and which have their crimped portions extending through the slots into the interiorof the post. The fence-wires are secured to the fence-post -by a verticallydisposed rod or wire 13, arranged on the interior of the post and passing through the inwardly-projecting loops formed by the crimping portions of the Wires. The upper end of the locking wire or rod is bent to form a hook 14:, which engages the upper end of the post, and the upper end of the post receives a cap l5, provided with a reduced portion or plug fitting within the upper end of the post. rlhe reduced portion or plug of the cap is provided,
adjacent to the locking-wire, with a groove l5 for the reception of the same.
It will be seen that the fence-post is simple, strong, and durable, that its base forms a firm anchor and support, and that fence-wires may be readily secured to the post.
What I claim is- 1. The combination of a base composed of a central vertical support having a reduced upper end forming a plug, horizontal arms extending diametrically from the lower end of the support, and flanges disposed longitudinally of the arms, formed integral with the same and the support and provided at their outer end with perforations, a tubular post mounted on the base and receiving the reduced upper end or plug of the support in its lower end, and inclined braces secured at their upper terminals to the post and provided at their lower ends with hooks engaging the perforations of the iianges, substantially as described.
2. The combination of atubular fence-post provided with a vertical series of horizontal slots communicating with its interior, fencewires arranged in the slots, extending into the interior of the post and forming loops, a vertical locking wire or rod arranged within the fence-post, passing through the loops of the Wires and provided at its upper end with a supporting-hook engaging the upper edge of the tubular fence-post, and a cap having a reduced portion fitting Within the upper end of the post and provided with a grooveV receiving the locking Wire or rod, substantialiy as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in ro the presence of tWo Witnesses.
WILLIAM H. II. Witnesses:
J. C. REINTGES, FRED. J. BERTMAN.
