HANDLE-BAR FOR BICYCLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,796, dated April 13, 189'?.

To. all whom it' may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. MCGIN- NISS, of Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handle-Bars for Bicycles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to the handles of bicycles and other analogous devices, and has for its object to furnish means whereby the cork or other similar'handholds of such handles will be firmly held in position and will be longer preserved in their original form and condition than heretofore.
Vith this object in view my invention consists in the improved construction of caps for such handles, the application to such handles of removable annular wedges which shall snugly iit the handle-bar, and in the improved construction, arrange1nent,and combination of parts forming such handle, as will be fully described hereinafter and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a view of my improved handle in longitudinal section, the handle-bar being in elevation. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the handle. Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the removable annular wedge, and Fig. 4 is a View in side elevation of my improved cap.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A is a bicycle handle-bar of any approved construction. B is a cap or nut applied to the end thereof; O, the cap which is secured to the handle-bar at a proper distance from the end thereof to receive and support the inner end of the handle proper.
D indicates the removable annular wedge E, the handle proper, usually made of cork or like substance.
The cap B is provided with an inner annular wedge-shaped chamber a, located between an outer flaring or conical-shaped ferrule l) and an inner cup or thimble c. The interior 5o of the cup or thimble c is threaded to correspond with the thread on the end of the handle-bar.
In constructing a handle in accordance with my invention, the inner cap being in place on the handle, the cork handheld is set in place with cement, as usual, the annular Wedge which fits snugly on the handle-baris placed in position, projecting into the handhold, and finally the cap is placed in position and tightly screwed up, in which operation the inner end of the inner cup or thimble engages the outer end of the movable annular wedge D and forces it farther in upon the handle-bar and into the handhold, while the outer ferrule passes inward over the outer wedge of the handhold, thus causing the cork of the handheld to be compressed into the annular chamber a, between the inner cup c and outer ferrule b, and firmly held in position and prevented from coming loose or crumbling off at the outer edges or corners. As a means for turning up the cap I show a hole ffor the insertion of a pin or bar, but any other suitable means may be employed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. A cap for bicycle handle-bars consisting of an inner cup or thimble, and an outer liaring or conical-shaped ferrule, the space between said cup or thimble and ferrule forming an annular wedge-shaped chamber, substantially as set forth.
'2. The combination of the handle-bar, the annular wedge mounted thereon, and the chambered cap, said cap consisting of an inner cup or thimble and an outer flaring ferrule, the space between said cup and ferrule forming an annular wedge-shaped chamber, substantially as set forth.
