UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUDWIG MAYBAUM, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CUFF BUTTON AND HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,791, dated April 13, 1897.
Application filed April 11, 1896. Serial No. 587,165. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LUDWIG MAYBAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Cuff Buttons and Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple but efficient form of combined cuff button and holder which will permit of the ready application of the cuif to the wristband of the shirt or 'an equally ready removal of the cuff therefrom without the necessity of removing the coat. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined cuff button and holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a View illustrating the application of the device to a cuff and shirt-sleeve. Fig. 3 is a top or plan View of the device, and Fig. 4 is a View illustrating a modification of the same.
A represents a cuff-button which may be made of any desirable material and ornamented, as to its face, in any appropriate manner.
Projecting from the back ofthe culf-button A is a loop a, which passes through a coiled spring I), the latter also receiving a loop d, projecting forwardly from the outer end of a strip or bar B, which is bent or hooked at its inner end, said bent or hooked portion being provided with teeth, as shown at f in Fig. 1. One terminal of the coiled spring I) bears against the back of the button A and the other terminal of said spring bears against the outer end of the bar B. Hence the tendency of said spring is to thrust the inner end of said bar B forward or toward the button A.
The button is applied to the cuff D, so that the loop a occupies the usual buttonholes of said end at the outer end of the same, the bar B projecting inwardly on the rear side of the cuff, so that its hooked end f is in position for engagement with the wristband F of the shirt in order to retain the end in position thereon, the cuff being adjustable up and down on the sleeve to the extent of the inwardly-projecting portion of the bar 13.
Then it is desired to change the position of the cuff or to remove the same, the hooked inner end of the bar B may be readily withdrawn from engagement with the wristband by pressing the outer end of said bar toward the button A, and the cufi can be reapplied or adjusted with equal readiness, either oporation being performed without the necessity of removing the coat. 1
In the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 the spring 1) acts both as a spring and as a hinge for connecting the button A and bar B; but, if desired, the hinging of these parts may be independent of the spring. For instance, as shown in Fig. 4, lugs a d are formed upon the buttonA and bar B, respectively, a hingepin 9 passing through these lugs and the spring I) being coiled around this pin.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the button having a loop on the back of the same, abar constructed to engage with the wristband of the shirt and also having a projecting loop, and a spring coiled around said loops and acting at one end upon the button and at the other end upon the bar, whereby it serves as a combined spring and hinge, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specificationin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LUDWVIG MAYBAUM.
