SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,577, dated April 13, 1897. Application filed June 8, 1895. Serial No. 551,547. (No model.) Patented in England November 26 1891, No. 20,555.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT FYEE KERR, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Glasgow, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Printing Butter, Margarine, and the Like, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 20,555, bearing date November 26, 1891,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for prin ting butter, margarine, and such like soft substances; and it has for its object to improve their construction and action.
Under this invention the cylinder, with its piston,is operated in a simpler and better manner than heretofore; and in order that my said invention may be properly understood 1 have hereunto appended two explanatory sheets of drawings, whereon- Figure 1 is afront elevation of the machine, and Fig. 2 a vertical section of the same.
The frame a of the machine, which is secured to a table 5, has two cross-heads c d, one below the other, capable of sliding on guidebars e on the frame. The upper cross-head d is pinned to and actuated bya bent hand-1e ver f, which is fulcrumedat gto a fixed crossbar hat the back of the machine. The back of the lever has an adjustable weight 2' on it so arranged that the lever normally rests in the up position, as shown. The wooden butter-stamping piston j is pinned by pin j to the upper sliding cross-bar d.
The lower sliding cross-bar c, which has a central horizontal hole 0 in it for the reception of the head of the wooden molding-cylinder 7c, is connected by two rods Zm, which pass down through holes in the table to a cross-bar 'n at the under side of the table, connected by means of a connecting-rod 0 to a treadle-lever p. The treadle-lever has a cord or chain q attached to it which passes up over a pulley r at the under side of the table and is attached to a counterweight s. The head of the cylinder 7c is held detachably in place in the bar 0 by means of the metal ring The arrangement is such that by pressing on the treadle-lever p the cylinder k can be brought down on the butter, which is placed on a suitable wooden print 25, held in place on the table by catches a, and incloses it until by pulling down. the hand-lever f the piston 7' is lowered sufficiently to'force the butter into the recessed face of the print in order that a clearly-defined impress may be received.
The butter can be withdrawn by pushing up the hand-lever 1', thereby pulling up the piston attached to it. The cylinder will also be caused to rise at the same time by the action of the counterweight s, secured to the treadle-lever.
The machine may be used for printing square, round, or other-shaped prints, the cy1 inder and piston being shaped accordingly.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination, atable, a frame fitted on the table, a sliding cross-head carrying a molding-cylinder, a second sliding cross-head carrying a stamping-piston, a weighted lever located above the table for pressing down the piston, and treadle mechanism located beneath the table, connected by rods Z, m, to the cylinder crosshead, for operating the cylinder, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In combination, atable, a supporting and guiding frame thereon, a sliding cross-head carrying a stamp-piston, a Weighted lever pivoted in said frame at the rear of said crosshead, a vertical extension from said cross-head pivotally connected to said lever, a sliding cross-head carrying a printing-cylinder, a treadle mechanism located beneath the table, and means connecting said mechanism with said sliding cross-head, substantially as and for the purposes described.
Signed at Glasgow, Scotland, this 26th day of April, A. D. 1895.
ROBERT FYFE KERR.
