(N0 Mddel.)
R. MIELOHEN. DEVICE FOR SECURING WHEELS UPON AXLBS. No. 580,459. Patented Apr. 13, 1897.
fan/41194 7 7: 3M 4 *rnrns REINHOLD MIELOHEN, OF LEUTHEN, GERMANY.
DEVICE FOR SECURING WHEELS UPON AXLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,459, dated April 13, 1897.
Application filed August 27, 1896. Serial No. 604,085. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, REINHOLD MIELOHEN, blacksmith, of Leuthen, near Breslau, in the Province of Silesia, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Means for Securing WVheels upon Axletrees, of which the following is a specification.
The subject-matter of the present invention is an arrangement for securing wheel-axles.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 shows a side view of the safety axle-box. Fig. 2 shows a front view. Fig. 3 shows a vertical section. Figs. 4 and r are horizontal sections in the connected and semidisconnected state.
The axle is fitted in the usual way with an axle-box b. The latter is fitted with a collar b, which serves to receive a spring (1, and into which a cover 0, put over. the axle-box, is inserted.
At the anterior end the axle a and axle-box b are fitted with corresponding slots, into which an adjusting-bolt 6 can be inserted. This adjusting-bolt is provided with an angular slot g, which corresponds with a transversal slot h in the axle a and box I). In order to secure the connection, a forelock or pin f is inserted into this slot 77,,whicl1 pin f is provided with an incision corresponding with the shape of slot 9. In order to be able to introduce this pin f, it is necessary to raise the ad justing-bolt e a little, so that the head of the forelock or pin can be passed through the horizontal partof slot gin the adjusting-bolt. If the latter is now dropped, the vertical part of slot y will catch into the incision of the pin, whereby the pin is held fast in its position. In order to prevent any accidental raising of the adjusting-bolt, the latter is provided with a notch e, which, when the adjusting-bolt is pushed home, is just above the axle-box 1). While in this position the cover 0 is forced by the pressure of spring 03 into the notch e, whereby the adj Listing-bolt is retained in its position and prevented from shifting through concussions while the wheels are running. In order to disengage the connection, it will be requisite in the first place to push back the cover 0 sufficiently far to disengage it from notch e, whereupon the bolt 6 should be raised, after which the pin f can be withdrawn. In the case of carts with bars connecting the axles these bars may be fixed to a projection z of the adj u sting-bolts. In all other cases it will be expedient to prevent the complete withdrawal of the bolts 6 by nuts or the like fitted to their lower ends, so as to obviate any needless removal of the cover 0.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An appliance for securing wheel-axles, characterized by a slot a in the axle, and the bolt 6, to be inserted into it and the axle-box b which is put over the axle in the usual way, which bolt e is held fast in position by a pin f, which by means of an incision of suitable form, catches into an angular slot of the bolt 8, so as to render any withdrawal or dropping out of the bolt 6 impossible unless it is first raised a little, while at the same time, when the connection is duly made, the bolt is held down in a depressed position by a shifting cover 0, or the like.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
REINIIOLD MIELCHEN.
