WHIFFLETREE=HOO K.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,768, dated March 30, 1897.
Application led December 31,1896. Serial No. 617,662. (No model.)
useful improvements in Whiffletrees; and itl has for its object to provide a whiftletree of simple construction, which shall be exceedingly durable, and which will effectually prevent the traces being accidentally detached from the whifletree-hooks.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
Referring to the various parts by numerals, 1 designates the whifiietree, which is provided at its ends With caps or ferrules 2. These caps may be closed at their outer ends or they may be open, as desired. At their forward side they are each formed with the opening 3, which registers with a cavity 4, formed in the whifiietree. Exten ding through each opening 3 and fitting into the corresponding cavity in the whiffletree is the rear end of a double trace-hook 5. The two ends of this double hook are apertured for the passage of a horizontal bolt 6, which extends longitudinally through the whiffletree from each of its ends a suitable distance. The inner ends of these bolts are threaded to facilitate their removal. The trace-hooks each consist of two parts 12 12, whose hook-sections 13 overlap and when closed form a closed ring. These sections are pivoted on the bolt 6 and have a vertical pivotal movement which permits the trace to be placed on them.
The clip secured to the square center of the whiffletree consists of two plates 7 '7, which fit the upper and lower side of the whietree, said plates being formed with the flanges 8, which extend over the sides of the whifetree a suitable distance. The rear ends of the plates 7 are connected by an integral strap 9, which forms a loop which may be engaged by the hook on the doubletree. This clip is secured to the whifietree by a vertical bolt 10. It will be seen that this clip may be very readily secured to or detached from the whiffletree, and thatwhen it is in place it is exceedingly strong and durable.
The trace-hook connection to the whiftletree is simple and very durable. The bolt 6 is supported by the whiffletree throughout its length except that portion crossing the cavity 4.. The ferrule or cap on the end of the whiftletree strengthens it and renders it almost impossible to break the hooks from it.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a wooden whifiletree, formed with a cavity at each of its ends on its Jforward side, a metal ferrule or cap over each end of the whiftletree, each of said ferrules being formed with an opening which registers with the adjacent cavity in the whifiietree, a rigid horizontal screw-bolt passing longitudinally into the whiflietree at each end thereof, said bolts extending through the cavities and entering the wood on each side thereof, their heads fitting against the outer faces of the whiffletree ends, and a tracehook extending through the opening in each ferrule and being pivotally mounted on the rigid screw-bolt, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix m'y signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELIJ AH WV. MOLENDON.
