D. S. LEGER.' NUT LOCK.
No. 579,648, Patented Mar. so, 1897,
WITNESSES @i2 ./ttorney DOMINICK S. LEGER, OF VALTI-IAM,
MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGN OR OF ONE- I'IALE TO ISAAC WHITE AND FREDERIC VIIITE, CF SAME PLACE.
NUT-
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,648, dated March 30, 1897'. Application filed December 17, 1896. Serial No. 616,058. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, DOMINIOK S. LEGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at NValtham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and usefulwlmprovements in Nut-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.
My invention relatesV to improvements in nut-locks designed particularly for use in connection with rail-securing bolts or the like, and has for its object the production of a simple and efficient nut-lock by means of which a series of nuts may be simultaneously locked against rotation, thereby preventing the loosening of the nuts due to vibration incidental to the use of such devices7 particularly when employed in railway construction.
To the accomplishment of this object, my invention consists in providing` a laterally and longitudinally curved resilient nut-lock intermediate ol' afish-plate and nut-lock, and in securing the nut-lock to the nuts and the nut-lock plate to the nut-lock to produce a firm and non-vibrating connection throughout the entire device.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my nut-lock applied to the fishplate connecting the contiguous ends of two rail-sections. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the same. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the nut-lock plate, and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the nut-lock.
Referring to the figures on the drawings, 1 and 2 indicate theadjacent ends of two railsections connected by a lish -plate 3, provided with bolt-apertures 4, correlative with similar apertures 5 in the rails, and through which project the threaded ends 7 of rail-securing bolts 8.
9 indicates what Iwill term my nut-lock plate, consisting of astrip of spring material provided with a series of apertures 10, correlative with the apertures in the fish-plate and slightly curved laterally and longitudinally for a purpose hereinafter apparent.
l1 indicates the nuts screwed upon the extremities of the bolts S and seated in correlatively-shaped apertures l2 in a nut-lock 13, secured against the face of the nut-lock plate 9, as by a loop 14, projecting from the nutlock plate and through an aperture l5 in the nut-lock 13.
1G indicates a wedge-shaped pin passed through the loop and designed by its wedging action to force the nut-lock against the nut-lock plate. The resiliency of the nutlock plate will now constantly exert a pressure upon the rear sides of the nuts, tending to prevent all vibration of the parts usually incidental to the use of such devices.
I do not care to limit myself to the details of construction herein shown and described, but reserve for myself the right to change, modify, and vary such details as come within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a longitudinally and laterally curved resilient nut-lock plate pronut-lock and means for adj ustably securing the nut-lock to the nut-lock plate, substantially as specified.
2. In adevice of the character described, the combination with a resilient nut-lock plate provided with bolt-apertures and longitudinally and laterally curved, of a nut-lock provided with nut-apertures and with a loopaperture, a loop projecting from the nut-lock plate and passing through said aperture, and a wedge-shaped pin passing through said loop and designed to adjustably secure the nutlock plate and the nut-lock, substantially as specified.
In testimony 'whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DOMINICK S. LEGER.
