TIRE-TIGHTQENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,260, dated March 23, 1897. Application filed September 5,1896. Seria1No.605,006. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM DOBRO- WOLSKI and HARRY WISE, citizens of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Tire-Tightener, of which the following is a specification.
.The invention relates to improvements in tire-tighteners.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device adapted to be applied to all kinds of vehiclewheels and capable of enabling the felly to be expanded and contracted without the use of a skilled mechanic to tighten a tire in hot dry weather and to permit the woodwork to expand in damp weather and prevent the wheel from becoming dished.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a wheel provided with a tire-tightener constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the adjusting-screw. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the telly-engaging block or nut.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawmgs.
1 designates a spoke having its outer end reduced and provided with a thimble or sleeve 2, extending beyond the outer end of the spoke and forming a socket for the reception of the inner portion 3 of an adj Listing-screw 4E. The adjusting screw 4 has an outer threaded portion and the inner smooth portion 3, which is of greater diameter than the threaded portion and which fits snugly within the extended portion of the sleeve or thimble, is rounded, and bears against the outer end of the spoke, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings. The enlarged smooth portion 3 is detachably swiveled in the socket of the sleeve or thimble 2 by screws 5, arranged in the threaded perforations of the latter and engaging an annular groove 6 of the portion 3.
The outer threaded portion of the adjustlng-screw engages a threaded bore or opening of a nut or block 7, which is provided with a concave outer face to conform to the configuration of a felly 8, and the latter is provided with a socket 9, which receives that portion of the adjusting-screw which projects beyond the nut or block 7 The inner face of the nut or block is fiat at the center around the threaded opening or bore and is curved at opposite sides thereof, as shown.
The adj Listing-screw is operated by a flange or collar 10, located at the inner ends of the threaded and smooth portions thereof and fixed to the same, and the collar or flange 10, which also bears against the outer end of the sleeve or thimble 2, has a, polygonal edge forming a wrench-seat.
By rotating the adjusting-screw the nut or block 7 is moved outward and inward on the same to expand the felly and tighten the tire or release the parts to permit the woodwork to expand, and this adjustment maybe made with an ordinary wrench without the aid of a blacksmith or other skilled mechanic.
It will be seen that the device is simple, strong, and durable, that it is applicable to all classes of vehicle'wheels, and that it will enable the parts to be readily adjusted to expand them for tightening the tire and to release them for permitting the woodwork to expand without dishing the wheel.
What we claim is In a device of the class described, the combination with a felly provided with a socket, and a spoke having a thimble extended beyond its outer end, a nut or block fitting against and conforming to the configuration of the folly and provided with a threaded opening registering with the socket thereof, and an adjustingscrew having a wrench-seat and composed of an outer threaded portion engaging the threaded opening of the nut or block, and an inner enlarged portion arranged within the extended portion of the thimble and bearing directly against the outer end of the spoke, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM DOBROIVOLSKI. HARRY WISE. WVitnesses:
