Nrrn TATES n'rnwr MORRIS M. NASH, OF LOXVELL, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO DANIEL S. RALPH, OF SAVE PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,168, dated March 23, 1897.
Application filed December 30, 1896. Serial No. 617,492. (No model.)
To all whom' it may 0074/0677!" I Be it known that I, MORRIS M. NASH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowell,
. in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand-Boxes for Electric Oars, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention first will be described fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, after which the distinguishing characteristics thereof will be particularly pointed out and distinctly defined in the claims at the close of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings illustrates in side elevation,'with certain parts broken away in order to show features which otherwise would be hid, a sand-box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view in vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction that is indicated by the arrows at the end of such line.
1 is the hopper or body of the sand-box, it having the side portions 2 2 and end portions 3 3, preferably inclined inwardly, as shown, and converging somewhat at the bottom.
4 4 are shafts, which are journaled in suitable bearings at the opposite ends of the hopper or body 1, and 5 are rollers that are mounted on the said shaft.
6 is an endless band or belt of any suitable material passing around the said rollers, with its upper length immediately beneath the opening in the bottom of the hopper 1. On the outer surface of this band or belt 6 are short slats 7 7, intended to act as buckets in conveying the sand or other material 71, Fig. 1, which is poured into the interior of hopper 1. upper surface of the endless band or belt 6, and the upper length of the said band or belt passes over the support 8 in the form of a board or the like, which sustains the weight of the sand in the hopper resting upon the band or belt 6. To the opposite edges of the said band or belt are connected sprocketchains 9 9, which pass around sprocket-gears 10, that are fast with the shafts 4: 4:. By means of the said sprocket-chains and the said sprocket-gears a positive movement is The said sand 71 rests partly on the communicated to the endless band or belt 6 whenever one of the shafts at 4: is rotated, this positive movement preventing the said band or belt from becoming clogged in its working by the contents of the hopper.
For the purpose of indicating the manner in which one of the shafts 4; 4 may be rotated when desired by the motorman upon the car to which the invention is applied Ihave shown a sprocket-gear 11 fast upon one of the said shafts, with a sprocket chain 111 passing around the said sprocket gear, the said sprocket'chain 111 having combined therewith any suitable actuating connections to enable it to be operated by the motorman conveniently.
15 is a pipe of suitable character extending downward from the hopper. As will be understood, the lower end of this pipe is arranged to discharge upon the track just in advance of a wheel of the car to which the invention is applied. To prevent the sand or other contents of the hopper from massing together or adhering to the sides of the hopper and in consequence failing to pass down onto the band or belt 6 and be discharged thereby, I provide the plate 16, which is 10- cated against one of the sides of the hopper, at the interior of the latter, and provided with projections 17 17 to engage with and act upon the contents of the hopper. These projections are in the form of strips, and some or all of them preferably are inclined, as shown, so that in the movement of plate 16 endwise in the hopper they shall act to press the said contents downwardly. The plate 16 is attached to the inner legs of U-shaped bars or strips 18 18, which fit over one side of the hopper and are pivoted thereto at 22 22. They have their outer legs connected to one another by a bar 19. Motion is transmitted to the plate 16 and connected parts by means of a rod 20, that is pivoted at one end to bar 19 and at the other to a crank-pin 21 on the sprocket-gear 11.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with the hopper, of the shafts and rollers at the opposite ends thereof, the endless band or belt passing over said rollers and provided with projections constituting buckets, the material placed in the said hopper resting on the upper length of the said band or belt, the sprocket-chains connected with the edges of the said band or belt, and the sprocket-gears fast with the said shafts and rollers, substantially as described.
2. The combination With the hopper, of the shafts and rollers at the opposite ends thereof, the endless band or belt passing over said rollers and provided With projections constituting buckets, the material placed in said hopper resting on the upper length of the said band or belt, the support 8 for the said upper length, the sprocket-chains connected with the edges of the said band or belt, and the sprocket-gears fast with the said shafts and rollers, substantially as described.
3. The combination With the hopper, of the shafts and rollers at the opposite ends thereof, the endless band or belt passing over said rollers and provided with projections constituting buckets, the material placed in the said hopper resting on the upper length of the said band or belt, the sprocket-chains connected with the edges of the said band or belt, the sprocket-gears fast With the said shafts and rollers, and a device to act upon the said material and prevent it from clogging in the hopper, substantially as described.
4. The combination With the hopper, the endless band or belt provided With projections constituting buckets and receiving on its upper surface the contents of the hopper, means to support and actuate the said band or belt, the plate 10, and the inclined projections 17, 17, on said plate, substantially as described. 5. The combination with the hopper, the endless band or belt provided with projections constituting buckets, and receiving on its upper surface the contents of the hopper, means to support and actuate the said band or belt, the plate 16 with its projections, the U -shaped bars fitted over the side of the hopper and pivoted thereto, and means to move said plate and bars, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
MORRIS M. NASH.
