B. SKRIWAN. PROCESS OF AND APPARATUS FOR HEMMING ENDS 0P INGANDBSGENT MANTLBS.
Patented Mar 16, 18 97.
Jizwifaz M JW 7 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL SKRTWAN, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
PROCESS OF AND APPARATUS FOR HEMMING ENDS 0F INCANDESCENT MANTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 578,841, dated March 16, 1897. Application filed December 18, 1896. Serial No. 616,172. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMIL SKRIWAN, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of Vienna, in the Empire of Austria- Hungary, have invented a certain new and useful Process of and Apparatus for I-Iemmin g the Ends of Incandescent Mantles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention consists of a process and apparatus'forhemming the edges of mantles for incandescent lighting. According to the same the mantle is first placed over a hol low cylinder, then the strip forming the hem placed round the end of the cylinder, so as to extend half over the mantle and half above the end of the cylinder, and the part of the strip extending above the cylinder is then turned into the latter and properly retain ed in position by inserting a flanged stopper into said cylinder end. The upper end of the cylinder is provided with vertical slots extending from the top downward, by means of which the hem thus secured by the stopper may be provisionally fixed to the mantle end by means of pins inserted through the said slots or slot; and in order to render the present specification more easily intelligible reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective elevation of the hollow cylinder with the mantle thereon Fig. 2, a similar elevation with the hem round the cylinder end. Fig. 3shows the end of the hem tucked into the cylinder; Fig. 4c, the stopper in the end of the cylinder; Fig. 5, the hem provisionally secured by means of the pins as above described.
The material of which the mantle m is formed is placed on thehollow cylinder at, as shown at Fig. 1. The material or strip of material n, forming the hem, is then placed around the upper end of the cylinder at, as shown at Fig. 2, about one half of said strip being around the mantle, which is flush with the upper end of the cylinder, and the other half standing over or above the end of the cylinder. The part of the strip extending upwardly is then tucked into the cylinder, as at Fig. 3, and the stopper 1), which fits the cylinder and is provided with a flange which closes down onto the upper edge of the said cylinder is placed in the end of the same and presses the inner part of the hem properly into position. The upper end of the cylinder is provided with a vertically-arranged slot a or with several slots intowhich apin 0 may be stuck through the mantle and the hem, as shown at Fig. 5, in order to provisionally secure the latter to the former. The mantle with the hem is now taken 01f the cylinder and the hem sewed onto themantle in the usual manner.
I claim as my invention- 1. A process for hemming the ends of incandescent mantles which consists of placing the mantle over a hollow cylinder with its end flush with the end of the said cylinder, placing the strip of material forming the hem round the end of the cylinder outside the mantle with about half its breadth extending above the end of the cylinder, tucking the extending part of said strip into the cylinder, and properly smoothing the same therein by means of a stopper to fit the cylinder and provisionally securing the hem to the mantle end by means of a pin or the like, substantially as described.
2. An apparatus for securing the hem to the ends of incandescent mantles, consisting of a hollow cylinder having in its end a suitable slot extending vertically downward and a stopper having annular flange to fit the end of said cylinder in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
EMIL SKRIXVAN.
