CHECK-ROW CHAIN OR WIRE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 578,830, dated March 16, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES W. PARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at est Pullman, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Row Chains or Wires; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I

My invention relates to improvements in check row chains or wires; and the object is to provide a novel eye or loop connection or fastening for the meeting ends of the links of the check-row wire which will unite the ends of the links in such a manner that the checkrow wire may be drawn from the reel or spool with certainty and expeditiously, and the checks will engage the forks or guides in such a manner that they will serve the purpose intended and at the same time preserve the entirety of the wire and without damage to the forks or guides on the reel.

I have fully and clearly illustrated my in vention in the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 is a side view of a well-known reel or spool having the wire wound thereon and a portion extended and the end fastened to a stay-pin. Fig. 2 is a side view of my improved link connection. Fig. 3 is a central section through the ties and fastenin gs. Fig. 4 is a detail of the loop or eye connections with the eyes formed and the initial wrap or coil taken and the end of the wire extended.

A A designate links of the check-row wire, the meeting ends of which it is intended to connect together. To accomplish this, an eye 1 1 is formed in the meeting ends of the links and the two links hooked together with the free ends of the turned-down parts extending a short distance along and parallel with the main wire below or beyond the base of the completed eye, and then I coil the free end of the wire around both strands one or more times in the direction of the eye and force the end 2 down tight and against the last of the basic coils, substantially as shown in the drawings. A secure fasteningis thus effected which naturally takes or forms an oval and conical form with the smaller part or frustum farther from the eye and the base or larger portion at the base of the eye, as indicated in the drawings,

By winding the wire backward or in reverse direction to the turns of the wire at the eye I attain a larger bearing between the checks and the forks, and by completing the coils of the fastening on the end adjacent to the base of the eye the damage usually resulting to the main strand by the impact of the fork thereon is obviated, and as in use the checkwire passes around the sheaves in continual succession it is of course more or less subject to break; but my invention insures a very clean and smooth working surface, because the coils are wound toward the eye in the link, making an oval and conical Wrap instead of presenting an extended and square or abrupt front to the dropping-forks of the check-rower or other places on or around the sheaves or rollers, thus lessening the liability of, catching the wire and breaking it or'causing delay and inconvenience in the operation of the machine.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The connection for the links of a check-row wire, consisting of forming the meeting ends of the wires with eyes having one member of each eye lying parallel with the main wire, coiled about the two contiguous strands in the direction toward the base of the eye forming an oval conical wrapping with the apex on the main wire and the base embracing the base of the eye, and the extreme end of the wire forced down tightly against the basic coil, whereby the eye is firmly braced and a conical surface presented to the droppingforks of the check-rower, substantiallyas and for the purpose set forth.
