NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 578,591, dated March 9, 1897.
Application filed October 5, 1896.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. ALTHEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at O- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Nut-Locks, of which the following isa specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of nut-locks, and has particular relation to the construction of nut-locks for use on wagonspindles and other similar places.
The objects of my invention are to provide an improved nut-lock of this class of such construction and arrangement as to prevent a nut from working off the spindle and to produce said nut-lock in a simple and inexpensive form. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a longitudinal section of a portion of a wagon-spindle having my improved nut-lock in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is an end view of the spindle, showing the nutlock thereon. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the parts of my improved locking device, and Fig. 4 is a view taken from the opposite side from that shown in Fig. 3.

1) represents one of the parts of my improved lock, which is in the form of a disk and which is provided with a continuous peripheral groove Z7. The forward face and upper side of the disk I) has formed therein a short way or channel 0, which leads into the groove 1), while a similar way or channel at is formed in the lower side of the disk I), and also communicates with the groove b. Adjacent to the opening d the groove or channel b is provided in its inner wall with a recess e. Adjacent to the opening 0 the inner wall of the groove 1) is provided with a shoulder 6. As indicated in the drawings, the inner line or wall of the groove 1) extends to the recess 6 in a slightly-inclined direction.
Through the central opening of the disk I) is adapted to pass the usual axle lag-screw f, the head of the latter bearing against the outer face of the disk I) and retaining said disk against the end of the axle-spindle.

face of which is provided, as indicated more clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings, with oppositely-located inwardly-projecting lugs g 9 This ring 9 is, as indicated in the drawings, adapted to embrace the disk b, the lugs g and g gaining entrance to the groove 1) through the medium of the ways 0 and d. The lugs having thus been made to enter the disk-groove the locking-ring is turned downward, the lugs g and g traveling in the groove 6 until the lug 9 drops into the recess 8 on the under side of the disk and the lug g is against the shoulder e of the upper side of the disk.
As indicated in the drawings, I preferably the lower side when said ring is in the locked position, with a stem h, which serves partly as a weight to retain the ring in a locked position and indicates to the eye whether or not said ring is in a locked position. Onthe inner face of the ring g and in the upper portion thereof I have provided a forwardly-projecting boss orlug is, which is adapted to come into contact with the outer face of the nut a in case the latter is screwed inward past the outer end of the spindle.
From the construction and operation which I'have described it is obvious that a simple, effective, and inexpensive nut-lock is provided which may be employed in connection 'with any of the ordinary constructions of wagons. It is also evidentv that by the use of my improved locking device any tendency of the nut toward working off the spindle is obviated and that said nut must retain-its place on the spindle until the ring 9 is inverted and detached from the disk 1).
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a nut-lock the combination with a spindle, a nut thereon and a disk secured against the end of said spindle, a peripheral groove in said disk and oppositely-located ways leading to said groove, of a ring 9 having oppositely-located forwardly-projectinglugs, the latter being adapted to enter said disk-groove through the medium of said ways, substantially as-and for the purpose specified.
