' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID WHITE, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE KNICKERBOCKER FIRE EXTINGUISI-IER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
SPEGIFICA TION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,434, dated March 9, 1897.
Application filed May 26, 1896.
and to the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side view, with parts broken away, of
a hand fire-extinguisher made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmental face view of the extinguisher looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a a vertical section of the same on an enlarged scale on the line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a de: tail top view of the sealing-plate to be hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A designates a cylinder or main body portion of my improved hand fire extinguisher, which may be connected with the top and bottom a b, respectively, inany suitable manner. The top a has secured to it a suitable cage 0, which supports a coiled spring (1 to hold a valve 6 seated against a valve-seat f of the port to charge the fire-extinguisher. This valve-seat f is struck up from the body of the metal forming the top a of the extinguisher and is sealed by suitable means, as by a plate g, soldered in the upper portion of the port formed by the valve-seat. This plate 9 is preferably provided with a loose extension g, which projects from the edge thereof and which is provided with an aperture g therein for purposes which will be hereinafter explained.
.At the lower end of the cylinder is a nozzle metal and is soldered to the body of the cyl- Serial No. 593,163. (No model.)
der, so as to prevent the escape of liquid through the nozzle h. The extinguisher is next filled by forcing the valve 6 against the tension of its spring 01, when the liquid is forced into the cylinder together with the gas for charging the same. When the cylinder has been properly filled and charged, the valve is allowed to reseat itself against the valve-seat f and the sealing-plate g is sol dered to the opening or port formed by the valve-seat, so thatthe fire-extinguisher as a whole is securely sealed.
When it is desired to put the fire-extinguisher into operation, it is merely necessary to twist off the cap i by means of'the handle j and hook-like extension 7c, which provide double levers therefor. The cap being soldered in the manner shown and described provides against injury to the nozzle h in twisting off or removing the cap from the nozzle. When it is desired to refill the fireextinguisher, the hook -1ike extension is on the cap '5 can be inserted in the aperture 9 of the sealing-plate and the latter can be removed therewith from the opening in the top of the cylinder, which gives access thereto.
It will be observed that by my invention I am enabled to make the body of the fire-ex tinguisher itself form the valve-seat of the inlet-opening and the nozzle for the ejection of the fluid, thereby greatly diminishing the cost of construction over devices wherein separate parts are provided for this pur-' pose and at the same time overcoming the liability of leakage at the points of joinder between the auxiliary or separate parts forming the valve-seat and nozzle and the body of the extinguisher itself. Furthermore, such auxiliary parts forming the nozzle and valve-seats in fire-extinguishers heretofore made were cast of soft metal and liability of injury to such soft-metal parts was great. These disadvantages are overcome by my invention, and a simple, cheap, and efficient hand fire-extinguisher is provided.
I am aware that it is old to provide asealed body portion, with means connected to said nozzle or nipple of frangible material adapted cap for removing the same, an inlet-port conto be broken when it is desired to operate the nected with the extinguisher, the valve-seat extinguisher, and such I do not claim; but whereof is struck up therefrom, and a seal- 5 What I do claim, and desire to secure by ing-cap sealing the opening in said port, sub- 15 Letters Patent, is stantially as described.
