ELECTRIC RAIL-BOND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,304, dated March 2, 1897.
' Application filed April 29, 1896. Serial No. 589,580- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BUDD J. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Rail-Bonds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to certain improvements upon the electric rail-bond that forms the subject-matter of my prior Letters Patent, issued December 31, 1895, and numbered 552,477, the object of the present improvement being to provide a bond in which a body portion having great flexibility is connected at its respective ends to the laterallyextending rivet-studs, by which the bond is attached in place at the side of the rails. I attain such objects by the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the present improved bond with parts broken away; Fig. 2, a top plan of the same.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in both views.
As in my former patented construction of December 31, 1895, the present bond will consist of a main body portion f a loop formation, attached at its respective ends to the lat erally-extending rivets or heads 2 2, by which the bond is secured at the Web of the rail.
The present invention consists in the formation of the looped body portion 1,0f a number of strands or small bars of copper placed side by side and which are secured to the rivet studs or heads 2 by being placed side by side in a suitable mold, so that the rivet studs or heads can be cast thereon to make a durable as well as a perfect electrical connection.
With the present construction the series of small bars or strands composing the flexible body portion of the bond, as above described, admits of a great degree of compactness in a lateral direction being attained, so that the bond will be capable of use between the usual fish-plates and the sides of the rails, as in my former patented construction.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters'Patent, is 7 An electric rail-bond, comprising a loopshaped body portion, formed of a series of strands or bars arranged side by side, so as to have lateral compactness, and rivet-studs secured by casting or otherwise to the ends of such body portion and arranged to project laterally therefrom, substantially as set forth.
