Be it known that I, STEPHEN D E GAETANO, a citizen of the United States,.and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Billiard-Cushions, of which the following is a specification.

My invention comprises the construction of the rubber cushion throughout its entire length with an elastic strip of hair cloth curved in cross-section andembedded in the rubber just beneath the upper surface and extending from near the outer to near the inner edge of said surface for the purpose of effecting a quick rebound with slight compression on the impact with a ball, as will be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a top view of a portion of a billiard or pool table provided with my present improvement, the rubber being partly broken away to show the elastic strip within it. Fig. 2 is across-section of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the cushion proper.

Before describing further the details of construction I will here state that strips of textile material, including hair-cloth, have been heretofore used to cover the concussionface of the rubber cushion of billiard-tables,

a is the elastic strip of one or more thicknesses of hair-cloth, embedded in the cushion B just beneath the upper surface of the latter. The strip a is curved in cross-section, preferably concavely when seen from above, as in Figs. 2 and 3, its edges 1) and c reaching nearlyto the upper, inner,and outer edges, respectively, of the triangular rubber cushion, so that when a ball strikes the edge at b it will rise slightly by the impact, causing compression crosswise of the strip of hair-cloth, increasing the depth of the curvature or concavity at the center thereof, where letter a is placed, setting the spring, so to say, which, resuming its normal position by the force of its elasticity, instantaneously rebounds the ball proportionately to the force of impact. This makes a very quick and yet comparatively soft cushion.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a billiard or pool table, the combina tion,with the elastic cushion,of an elastic strip curved in cross-section and embedded in and beneath the upper surface of said cushion, between the upper outer and inner edges thereof.

2. In a billiard or pool table, the combination, with its elastic cushion, of a strip of haircloth curved in cross-section and embedded in and beneath the upper surface of said cushion, between the upper outer and inner edges thereof.
