MACHINE FOR HEATING HAT-BRIMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,650, dated February 23, 1897. Application filed December 21,1896. Serial N0- 616,4=85. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CARL EIOKEMEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for I-Ieating I-Iat-Brims, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to certain improvements in the machine for heating hatbrims for which Letters Patent were granted to Rudolf Eickemeyer, No. 338,497, dated March 23, 1886, by which improvements the machine is rendered more efficient, inasmuch as the brim-heating ring is constantly supplied with steam, while the side, crown, and band are protected by a layer of asbestos or other suitable insulating material applied to the brim-heating ring.
In the machine heretofore patented a flat solid oval heating-ring is used, which is obj ectionable, as it only partially heats that part of the hat-brim which is to be curled, and as it is heated by radiation from the brim-bed below it does not perform this function until after a considerable lapse of time.
My improved hollow brim-heating ring is so arranged that the brim edge only is heated, while the side, crown, and band'of the hat are not acted upon by the heat radiated toward them, as they are insulated from the source of heat: V
By the use of a solid flat ring the heat radiates toward the hat which originally fitted tightly to the block and produces thereby a certain expansion of the hat, so that it becomes loose on the block, which requires the block to be held in position while the hat-is being transferred from the brim-heating machine to the curling-machine. This expansion of the band of the hat not only interferes with the transfer of the hat to the curlingmachine, but is also objectionable as it interferes with the curling of the hat-brim in these machines for the reason that the hat being loose on the block, and in consequence thereof not properly centered, the brim could not be made uniform on all its sides.
To overcome the difficulties referred to and at the same time increase the efficiency of the hat-brim-heating machine, myimproved ma-' chine consists of a brim-heating bed, a central crown-cooling bed, and a hollow brimheating ring that is continuously provided with steam and provided with an insulated layer at its inner surface, said brim-heating ring being pivoted at one side and adapted to be moved in open or closed posit-ion by means of a counterbalancing-weight and footoperated treadle.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved machine for heating hat-brims. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same, showing a complete heating-ring in position on one end chamber, the cold-water reservoir and brim-heating ring removed from the middle chamber, and the cold-water reservoir with its center chuck in position on the opposite end chamber. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectionof the machine on line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the machine with its supporting side frames removed and showing the pipe connections for the cold-water reservoir.

Referring to the drawings, or represents the main bed-plate box, which is made of oblong shape and provided with steam inlet and out let pipes a a respectively, at its opposite ends. The main bed-plate box a is supported by upright side frames a or, which are con nected by a longitudinal brace-rod of, that serves not only to connect the supporting side frames, but also as a pivot for the footoperated t-readles. Screw-nuts a are applied to the ends of the brace-rod a at the outside of each side frame a a to prevent the spreading apart of the side frames that hold the parts in' position. The main bed-plate box a, is provided with a number of cooling-chambers, three being shown in the drawings, in which cold-water boxes I) are arranged, that are supported by top flanges b on correspondretained in the chambers of the main box by set-screws 6 that pass through lugs b and bear against the bottoms of the main box a. On the top of the main box a and the coolingboxes are arranged hollow oval brim-heating rings 0, which are hinged at one side to the main box a and provided each with an arm extending beyond the hinge connection, to which arm is hunga counterbalancing-weight 0 The arm 0 is also connected in front of the brace-rod a by a pivot-link c with a treadlc 0 which is pivoted to the brace-rod a and extended in forward direction so as to be readily acted upon by the foot of the operator.
Each hollow brim-heatin g ring 0 is provided at its rear part with steam inlet and outlet channels, which extend through rear lugs c of the ring 0, said lugs being connected by a transverse pintle c", which are supported in brackets c of the main box a and which form with the pintle the hinge connection of the ring 0 with the main box a. The lugs o are provided with pipes 0 to which steam is supplied by flexible tubes 0 as shown in Fig. 2, the steam passing into the ring 0 through one of the pipes c and lugs c at one side of a partition 0 and out through the other lug 0 pipe 0 and tube 0 to suitable steam inlet and outlet pipes, which are not shown in the drawings. To the interior of the brim-heating ring 0 is applied a layer d of asbestos or other suitable insulating material, which is attached by screw-bolts d to upright-s cl, located at diametrically opposite points on the brim-heating ring 0, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The layer of asbestos protects the side, crown, and band of the hat against being heated, the heat being applied only to the top and bottom of the hat-brim by the heating ring 0 and main box a and confined thereto by the cooling-box h and insulating-layer d. 1
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a hat-brim-heating machine, the combination of a brim-heating bed-plate, a crowncooling bed within the same, a hollow brimheating ring, and means for supplying steam to said ring, substantially as set forth.
2. In a hat-brim-heating machine, the combination of a brim-heating bed-plate box, a crown-cooling bed Within the same, a hinged hollow bri m-heatin g ring supplied with steam, a counterbalancing-weight connected with said ring and a treadle connected with said ring so as to move it in raised or lowered position, substantially as set forth.
3. In a hat-brim-heating machine, the combination of a brim-heating bed-plate box, a crown-cooling bed located Within the same, a hollow bri m-heatin g ring supplied with steam and a layer of insulating material supported at the inner circumference of the brim-heating ring, substantially as set forth.
4. In a hat-brim-heating machine, the combination of a brim-heating bed-plate box, a crown-cooling bed within the same, a hollow brim heating ring, provided with upright lugs, and a layer of insulating material applied to said lugs and extending over the inner circumference of the brim-heating ring, substantially as set forth.
