PATENT CHARLES COMSTOGK, OF OZONE PARK, NEW YORK.
DEVICE FOR CLEANING FLUESAND FLUE-PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 577,647, dated February 23, 1897.
Application filed une 12, 1896. Serial No. 595,375. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES CoMs'rocK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ozone Park, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Cleaning Flues and Flue-Pipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to devices for cleaning flues, the escape-pipes for furnaces, and similar purposes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, while be ing comparatively inexpensive.
The invention is fully disclosed in the fol lowing specification, 'of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a horizontal section of my improved flue-cleaning device, and Fig. 2 a transverse section thereof.
In the practice of myinvention I provide a circular casing 5, provided with a back 6 and a removable front or cover 7 ,1 and said back 6 is provided centrally with a pin or projection 8, to which is secured one end of a strong spiral spring 9, and mounted on said pin or projection is a drum comprising a circular side or back portionlO, having an outwardlydirected annular flange or rim 11, and the other end of the spring 9 is secured to said drum, as shown at 12.
The casing 5 is provided at one side with a tubular extension 13, by means of which connection with a boiler, steam-engine, or other source of steam-supply may be made, and at the opposite side with a similar tubular extension 14, which is preferably conical in form and mounted on the spring-drum within the casing 5 is a long spring-metal tape or band 15, one end of which is secured to said drum, as shown at 16, and the other end thereof is connected with a rod or bolt 17, on which is mounted a circular disk or plate 18, which is held upon or connected with said rod or bolt by means of nuts, burs, or washers 19.
The disk or plate 18 may be of any desired size, and the tubular extension let is adapted to be passed into a fine or into a pipe which it is desired to clean, and when the proper connections are made the steam is turned on through the tubular extension 13, and said steam passes through the casing 5, around the spring-drum on which the tape or band 15 is wound, and the operation of the steam upon the disk or plate 18 forces said disk or plate through the flue or pipe, at the same time unwinding the tape or band 15, and by cutting off the steam the spring-drum will rewind itself and rewind the tape or cord 15 thereon and withdraw the disk or plate 18 from the flue or pipe. This operation may be repeated as often as desired or until the flue or pipe is entirely cleaned, and it will thus be seen that I provide a simple and effective device and one which is well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A device for cleaningflues and pipes, comprising asuitable circular casing having a removable side, a spring-drum mounted in said casing, a spring-metal tape, cord, or band wound on said drum, one end of which is secured thereto, and the other to a disk or plate, said casing being provided at one side with a tubular extension by means of which connection with a steam-supply may be made, and at the other end with a conical tubular extension by means of which connection with a flue or pipe may be made and through which the end of the tape, cord or band which is connected with the disk or plate passes, and said spring-drum being adapt-ed to be wound up by the pressure of the steam on said plate or disk, and said plate or disk being adapted to be blown through the flue or pipe, and to be withdrawn by said spring-drum, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 27th day of May, 1896.
CHARLES COMSTOOK.
