SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,600, dated February 23, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT A. FREEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Phila delphia and State of. Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to lamps wherein the burner is hinged to a cap-piece screwed to the lamp, the burner being adapted to swing open to permit the lamp to be filled, and in such connection it relates to the particular construction and arrangement of the parts of such lamp or burner attachment.
The principal objects of my invention are, first, to provide a lamp attachment consisting of a cap adapted to be screwed or otherwise fastened to the lamp, a sleeve hinged to the cap and carrying the burner, and a fine wiregauze partition arranged between the cap and sleeve, said partition being provided with an opening through which the wick is adapted to be inserted, and, second, to provide in a lamp attachment consisting of a cap and a sleeve hinged thereto a locking device for the same, consisting of an annular springstrip, one end of which is secured to the cap at the hinged connection of the sleeve, the other end of the spring-strip being provided with a button and stem adapted to traverse the wall of the cap and with a crimped slotted projection, and the sleeve being provided with an inward projection adapted to fit under the crimp of the spring to lock the cap and sleeve together.
My invention, stated in general terms, consists of a lamp attachment constructed and arranged in the manner hereinafter described and claimed.

Fig. 5 is a side elevational View, partly in broken section, of the said cap and sleeve; and Fig. 6 is a frontview, partly in an open position, of the said cap and sleeve and showing also the crimped spring-strip on the cap extending into the slot in the front thereof, the button for actuating the free extremity thereof, and thelug on the sleeve for engaging the c-ri m ped part or portion of said strip.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the lam p-fount, provided with the usual collar B. This collarB is internally screw-threaded, as at B, to receive a screw-threaded base a of a cap 17. The cap I) is hinged to a sleeve (1 by means of a split link b, engaging an eye or tube 01 of the sleeve d, as clearly illustrated in Figs. t and 5 of the drawings. To the sleeve (1 in any suitable manner, but preferably by a screw-joint, is secured the burnerpiece D. WVithin the cap b is arranged an annular flat spring strip or catch 6, one end being secured to the cap by the split link 6, being one member of the hinge connection between said cap and sleeve, while the other end is provided with a pin and button 6, inserted through the wall of the cap. The free end portion of the spring-strip e, as shown in Fig. 4, is crimped and slotted, as at (2 to form a locking-lug, which extends into a vertical recess 6 formed in the wall of the cap I), as clearly shown in Fig. 6. The sleeve d is provided with a com plemental indentation or lug cl, which lug, when the sleeve and cap are in locked position, slips over and. under the crimped and slotted lug e of the springstrip e, and holds thereby the said cap I) and sleeve (1 in the position illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. .VVithin the cap b is introduced a fine-gauze partition f, having a slot or opening f, through which the wick of the burner is adapted to pass into the well of the lamp from the burner. This partition fprevents the flame from the burner D from communicating with the oil in the Well of the lamp-fount.
The partition f permits all oil which may leak from the wick to readily return to the lamp-fount, and the aperture f is of such a size that the wick passing through the aperture is squeezed to relieve it of surplus oil, which returns to the Well of the lamp-fount.
