APPARATUS FOR DISINFECTING.

CHET, a citizen of France, residing at Paris, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Producing Gaseous Mixtures, mainly Formic Aldehyde, for Disinfecting Purposes, (for which I obtained British Letters Patent No. 11,557 dated May 27, 1896, and French Letters Patent No. 253,282, dated January 18, 1896;) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters o-f reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to an apparatus for producing gaseous mixtures, consisting mainly of formic aldehyde, to be used for disinfecting and similar purposes, and in such connection it relates particularly to the construction and arrangement of the apparatus for accomplishing said process.
The principal objects of my invention are, first, to provide an apparatus of simple and comparatively inexpensive construction in which gaseous mixtures, consisting mainly of formic aldehyde, for disinfecting purposes may be produced; second, to provide in such an apparatus a receiver wherein the trioxymethylene is placed, a worm surrounding said receiver, a tube connecting said worm with the bottom of the receiver, means for heating said worm and receiver, and a coiled outlettube leading from said receiver, and, third, to
provide in connection with such an apparatus means for introducing steam or moisture into the receiver to moisten the trioxymethylene.
My invention, stated in general terms, conf sists of an apparatus for the production of gaseousmixtures mainly consisting of formic aldehyde, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in whichl Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of an l apparatus embodying features of my invenformic aldehyde by simply heating the trioxyl methylene and thereby concentrating the aldehyde, but such process is unavailable for the reason that in the heating of the polymeride a large proportion of the aldehyde is polymerized. Again, by other processes heretofore in use the formic aldehyde'resulting therefrom was chemically impure and mixed with toxic gases, such as carbonio oxid.
By my present invention gaseous mixtures containing a large proportion of pure formic aldehyde are quickly and easily obtained without incurring danger, and the mixtures are obtained in accurately-determined mixed quantities.
Referring now to the drawings and particularly Fig. 1, the apparatus consists, preferably, of an outer cylindrical casing A, the lower portion of which is perforated, as at a, and the top of which is provided with a number of openings'a. The top of the casing A is closed bya lid or cover a2, to which athermometer a3, extendinginto the casing, is fixed in any desirable manner.
The cylindrical casing A is placed upon or overa fire-box B, of any suitable type, adapted to heat the interior of the casing to any desired temperature. Within the casing is arranged a worin O, connected at the top by means of a pipe c to a tube c', controlled by the cock c2. This worm surrounds a receiver D, which by preference consists of two separable portions, as shown. From the bottom of the receiver extends a tube d, having a closed lower end, but communicating with the lower end of worm O. This tube d is provided with a conical nozzle d, perforated at its top and extending into the receiver D. From the top of the receiver extends a tube d2, the upper end of which is closed by a removable screw-cap d3, resting upon a collar d4, placed on the lid or cover a2. A second worm E, similar to the worm O, surrounds the tube d2, one end of the worm entering the tube, while the other end of the Worm is con- IOO nectedto an outlet-tube e, leading to the place of delivery of the formic aldehyde.
In operation the rcceiverD is charged with trioxy methyl ene or other polymeride of formic aldehyde. The lire or burner in B is lighted and a current of air, antiseptic or other gas under pressure is forced through the worm C from the tube c. The airor gasis heated in its passage through the worm (l, and is then forced through the conical nozzle into and through the material in the receiver D and becomes charged with formic aldehyde. The charged gas then passes out into the worm E, and any powder carried forward by the gas is transformed therein. From the worm E the gas charged with pure formie aldehyde passes into the tube c, from which it is delivered to the designated place.
To force the air or gas through the appa ratus, it is obvious that either a compressor or force-pump S may be connected with the inlet-pipe c or a suction apparatus (not shown) connected with the discharge-pipe c.
In some cases a certain quantity of humidity is necessary to increase to effectiveness the disinfecting properties of the formic aldehyde. For this purpose l prefer to introduce into the receiver D water in continuons and limited quantities by means of the modiiied form of apparatus illustrated in Fig. f3.
The upper portion of the receiver D instead of being screwed down upon the lower por tion is simply .fitted down upon the same, a packing of asbestos or similar material being placed between the two portions. The upper portion is provided with two holes, one at the side for the thermometer and the other een tral, as in Fig. 1. The screw-cap closing the tube d2 is perforated to permit the introduction of a pipe f, having a cock f and sighthole f2. The pipe f communicates with a closed reservoir F, from the upper end of which extends a pipe G, terminating in the tube d2.
The reservoir F contains water, which by thc arrangement and connections above described is permitted to flow continuously into the receiver I).
Instead of employing water with the solid polymerides, such as trioxymethylene, a solution of formic aldehyde may be introduced, being stored lin the reservoir F. In such case the concentration of the solution will be increased until the limit at which trioxymethylene by itself would be employed, the heat under the circumstances effecting the volatilization of the water and the carrying off of the formic aldehyde, after which the trioxymethylene will be disassociated. The operation in this case may therefore be summed up as the obtaining in the apparatus itself of trioxymelhylene, or rather the indefinite series of polymerides of formic aldehyde.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In an apparatus for the production of formic aldehyde from a polymeride of formic. aldehyde, the combination of a receiver in which the polymcride is placed, a worin surrounding thc receiver and in communication with the bottom thereof, an auxiliary worm in communication with the top of said re ceiver, means forv hea-ting said worms and means for forcing air or similar gas through the worm, the receiver and auxiliary worm, substantially as described.
2. In an apparatus for the production of formic aldehyde from a polymeride of formic aldehyde, the combination of a receiver in which the polymcride is placed, a worm surrounding the receiver and in communication with the bottom thereof, an auxiliary worm in communication with the top of said receiver, means for heating said worms, means for forcing air or similar gas through the worms, the receiver and auxiliary worm and means for conducting water continuously into said receiver above the polymeride, substantially as described.
