GEORGE H. HAWES, OF RACINE, WISCONSIN.
VEHICLE-SPRING HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,428, dated February 23, 1897'.
. Application iiled June 19, 1896.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. HAWES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of W'isconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Spring Heads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to vehicle spring heads.
My object is to provide a more simple, easilyassembled, and durable head for vehiclesprings of the leaf type, and this is accomplished by the employment of certain novel features and combinations appearing more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation with one end of the couplingbox removed; Fig. 2, an end elevation looking in toward the cam coupling member and the clamping-nut, and Fig. 3 an end elevation looking toward the coupling-box and showing part of the same broken away to disclose the ends of the springs and the rear of the coupling member.
A and B designate the duplicate leafsprings, and O the coupling box or head. The ends of the springs are provided with inwardly-curved ends, which comprise inner and outer cam-jaws l and 2, which narrow The couplingbox is of substantially cylindrical outline, but its front half its cut away, so as to properly receive the ends of the springs, though the ends 3 and 4 of the coupling-box are circular. The rear inner wall of the coupling-box is provided with curved depressions 5 and 6, in which the curved ends of the springs rest.
D designates the coupling member.v It is provided with separated parallel rear curved cams 7 and 8, over which the jaws of the springs hook. The bottom of the open space between cams 7 and Sis provided with grooves 9 and 10, which are separated by a ridge 1l,
. and these grooves receive the thin ends of the jaws on the springs when the latter are spread far enough. The front of the coupling member is provided with a square nut-opening 12. E designates a bolt which passes from the rear of the coupling-box through said box,
Serial No. 596,153. (No model.)
between Vthe jaws of the respective springs, and through the coupling member.
F is a square nut through which the end of the bolt passes and which is received in the nut-opening l2, which prevents it from turning. After the parts have been assembled a blow on the bolt will rivet its end down on the nut, and thus the parts will be held secure.
The cam-jaws are free to rock on each other and on the cams of the coupling member, as well as in the depressions in the couplingbox. The springs can thus suitably expand or contract, but their expansion is limited by the top and bottom walls of the coupling-box, as well as the abutment of the ends of the cam-jaws on the base between the cams of the coupling member.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. In a carriage-spring head, the combination with a coupling-box, of springs having hooked cam ends, a coupling member having camswhich iit in the hooked cam l ends, and means for holding the coupling member in the box.
2. In a carriage-spring head, the combination with a coupling-box, of springs having hooked cam ends, a couplingV member having cams which fit into the hooked cam ends, and a bolt passing through the coupling-box and coupling member, substantially as described.
3. In a carriage-spring head, the combination with a coupling-box having side walls and provided with inner curved depressions,
of springs having cam ends located between the said walls and received in said curved depressions, and means for preventing displacement from the coupling-box of the cam ends of the springs.
4. In a carriage-spring head, the combination with a coupling-box provided with interior curved depressions, of springs having hooked ends forming inner and outer camsurfaces, the outer cam-surfaces being received in the curved depressions of the coupling-box, a coupling member having cams which t in the inner cam-surfaces of the springs, and means for holding said coupling member in position.
5. In a carriage-spring head, the combination with a coupling-box provided with interior curved depressions, of springs having hooked ends provided wit-h inner and outer In testimony whereof I have signed this cam-surfaces, the outer cam-surfaces fitting specification in the presence of two subscrib- 1o in the curved depressions, a coupling lneniing Witnesses. bei' having Cams which iii; in the inner cam 5 surfaces of the springs, and a bolt passing through the Coupling-box and coupling mein- XVitiiesses: bei', whereby Jhe latter is held Within the F.
