SWITCH-PLUG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,469, dated February 2, 189

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. PACA, a
` citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Switch-Plugs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings, in which- Figure I represents a switch-plug according to my invention in central longitudinal section. Fig. II represents amodication of the same, and Fig. III shows in side elevation a separate position of it.
This invention relates to the class of switchplugs which are used for temporarily connecting electrical lines or two wires of one line. i
It is desirable to make switchplugs as small in diameter as practicable with tithe strength required for durability in quick usage, and it is desirable to so connect the wires of the plug with certain of its own metallic parts as to insure perfect electric contact between the wires and such parts, yet so that the wires may be readily :removed from the plug; and the objectof this invention is to produce a switch-plug of simple structure and without small screws.
To this end my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts forming a switch-plug hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawin gs, 5 represents a switch-cord.
6 and 7 are conductingwires inclosed within the cord and insulated thereby from each other and from surrounding objects.
S represents the switch-plug, comprising two sections 9 and 10,-of fiber or other insulating material, and two sections l1 and 12, of metal or other electric conducting material. Section 11 is shaped with tenons 13 and 14, screw-threaded into sockets in the sections 9 and 10, respectively, and section l0 is shaped with a tenon l5, screw-threaded into a socket in section 12. The tenon 14 is slotted through one side at 18 up to the shoulder 16 to permit the Wire 6 to pass out and be held between the sections 10 and 1l at that shoulder, and the tenon l5 is slotted .through one side up to the shoulder 17 to permit the wire 7 to pass out and be held between the sections 10 and l2 at the'shoulder 17.
In putting the parts of this switch-plug together the sections 9 and l1 may be slipped upon the cord 5 and screwed together.. Then the Wire 6 is to be laid out through the slot 18, and the section l0 is to be slipped over the cord and screwed up against the wire 6 and shoulder 16. N ow the Wire 7 is to be laid out through the slot in tenon l5, and section 12 is then to be screwed home against the wire 7 and shoulder 17.
It may be seen that the act of thus screwing the insulating and the metallic sections of the body of this plug together secures also the conducting-wires in place. The screws are substantial tenons of the body-sections and no small screws are required, thus producing a simple, strong, eficient, and durable switchplug at little cost.
The modiiication illustrated in Fig. II shows that the arrangement of tenons may be varied and that washers, such as shown at 19 and 20, of metal, may be introduced for greater security and durability, if desired.
Having thus fully described my'invention, what I believe to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
A switch-plug comprising alternate sections of metal and insulating material provided with screw and socket joints and abutting shoulders, and a switch-cord comprising one or more conducting-wires and insulating material passing within the body of theplug, and the ends of the wires being secured between the said abutting shoulders in electrical contact with the metallic sections, substantially as described,
