SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,299, dated February 2, 1897. Application filed January I, 1896. Serial No. 574,387. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY H. BROWN, ALBERT S. GLAscooK, RICHARD S. QUINN, and JAMES W. BROWN, citizens of the'United States, residing at ashington Oourtllouse, in the county of Fayette and State of Ohio, have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating-Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in heating-stoves, and it especially relates to means for furnishing the draft to said stoves.
Our invention consists in the various c011- structions and combinations of parts herein- I 5 after described, and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a stove embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same with parts broken away and shown in section to better illustrate the said invention.
Like parts are represented by similar letters of reference in the several views.
In the said drawings, a represents the main 2 5 body or fuel-chamber of the stove,which may be of any suitable shape and size. It is provided at the top with a fuel-opening a, having a suitable cover a an outlet or smokeflue a being also provided at the top, into 0 which the usual smoke-pipe or uptake is connected. The body or fuel-chamber a is preferably made of sheet metal and is surrounded by a jacket 7), formed of similar material, the
fuel and smoke openings at and a being pro- 3 5 vided with suitable sleeves and thimbles a and a respectively, which pass up through the top I) of the jacket, whichis fitted snugly around the same. The jacket I) is constructed so that a chamber 0 is formed entirely around the firebox, and openings 0 in the top b of said jacket allow the discharge of heated air from said chamber. The chamber 0 is open at the bottom, so that a free circulation of air from near the floor is carried through said chamber and around the fire or fuel box to the openings 0 in the top I).
For supplying the draft to the fuel we construct, near the bottom of the fuel-chamber,
an opening a", to which is connected a draft- 5o tube a", which extends outwardly and upwardly within the chamber 0, formed by the jacket I). Immediately over the draft-tube a and depending into the chamber 0 is a cylindrical casing or sleeve a which is closed at the top and open at the bottom, so that the top of the draft-tube extends into the pocket or chamber formed by said sleeve or cylinder, said sleeve or cylinderbeing secured in position by being riveted or otherwise held to the jacket or fuel-box. At the top of the drafttube and within the pocket a is a suitable valve or registera", formed with a moving portion and a stationary portion wit-l1 openings adapted to register so as to form a communication with said tube or close the end of the same in a well-known manner. A suitable handle a isformed on said register, which extends outwardly through the side of the pocket a and the jacket I), thus furnishing means for regulating the opening into the draft-tube a lhis draft-tube a is tapered from the top downwardly, being smallest at the top and largest where it opens into the fire-box or fuel-chamber a. The main or vertical part of the draft-tube a is preferably formed of sheet metal, which is joined onto an elbow a, preferably formed of cast metal and riveted to the side of the fuel-chamber and about the opening a.
YThe construction of the draft-tube and the devices connected therewith, as described, furnishes the means for providing the air to bustion in a heated condition. The drafttube being extended into the pocket a which is arranged within the hot-air chamber, the heated air in said chamber is collected in said pocket and passes through the register into said tube. The tube extending downwardly into the hot-air chamber and in proximity to the fuel-chamber the air therein is further heated, and consequently expanded. The draft-tube being tapered from the top downwardly permits the air to enter the fuel-chamber in a diffused condition.
The devices for regulating the quantity of air admitted to the draft-tube may be varied and any of the Well-known controlling devices may be employed. Instead of having the handle at extended outwardly through the slotted opening in the side of the casing, a vertical handle may be employed, as shown the fuel-chamber necessary to support com-- in dotted lines at a which extends upwardly through the top of the casing and serves to turn the outer portion of the register in a well-known manner. Other modifications might readily suggest themselves.
Having thus described our invention, we claim 1. The combination with the fuel-chamber and the heating-chamber, of a pocket in said heating-chamber, a draft-tube extendinginto said pocket, said draft-tube being open at its upper end and extending; downwardly through said heating-chamber and communicating with said fuel-chamber at or near the bottom thereof, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with the fuel-chamber and the heating chamber, of a pocket in said heating-chamber, a draft-tube extending into said pocket, said draft-tube being open at the top and tapered from the top downwardly and communicating with said fuel-chamber at or near the bottom thereof, substantially as specified.
3. The combination with the fuel-chamber and the heating-chamber, of a draft-tube in said heating-chamber, the upper end of said pered from the top downwardly and communicating with said fuel-chamber at ornear the bottom thereof, substantially as specified.
