mounted-in the base ofthe machine at 14 and provided on each side withforwardly-extending arms 1 5, thefront ends of which are united by a universal bar 16, extending transversely of the maehineparallel with said rock-shaft 13 and arranged beneath a series of levers 17 pivoted at their forward ends toa transverse fulcrum-rodl 8 and having a uniform motion. The connecting-rods 4 incline inwardly,'and their llower ends terminate in, a line transversely of the machine andare pivoted at 19 to the levers 17 in rear of the fulcrum-rod 1S. The escapernent or spacing mechanism may be of any usual or suitable construction. r `The trip 24 is pivoted tothe key-lever at a point 26 in rear of the center of the machine (considered transversely) and is provided with an arm or lug 27, which normally and during the descent of the key-lever bears against a pin 28 upon the key-lever, being at this time held against said pin by the pressure ofspring 29, arranged'between the key-lever and the trip.
The lower end of the trip is` arranged to bear upon the rear end of the type-bar-eperating lever 17 toactuate and release the same and its 'connectedtype-bar and the universal bar. A pad-30 is provided beneath the keylevers to arrest their motion after releasement of the type-bars.

Upon relieving the key-lever 21 from pressure it resumes its initial position under the return pressure o f spring 25, during which motion the trip 2t rides along the end of lever 17 and vibrates independently on its own pivot against the tension of the sprin g 29, and upon risingabove said end of. lever 17 it vibrates forwardly under pressure of spring 29 and resumes its initial position with the lug resting against the stop 2S, as shown at Fig. 1. In a type-writing machine, the combination witha type-bar of a lever for operating the same and akeydever carrying avpivoted trip adapted to actuate the type-bar-operating lever and to detach itself therefrom by divergence, and means for holding said pivffoted trip rigid during the time it is actuating said type-bar-operating lever and detaching itself therefrom, substantially as set forth.
- 3. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a type-bar, a lever connected thereto, and a key-lever, the said key-lever and the said type-bar lever'having each separate fulerums, and the key-lever having a part adapted to contact with the type-bar lever,
the said part and the said type-bar lever vibrating Ain arcs which intersect each other, and the said part separating from said lever in the downward movement at the point of intersection ofsaid arcs, substantially as set forth. i

In a type-writing machine, the combination of a lever connected to a type-bar, a key-lever having a trip jointed thereto and adapted to bear at one end upon said typebar lever, the said trip being held rigidly during the downward movement of the key-lever and'operating to depress th'e type-bar lever and toslide along and off the same, whereby the type-bar and its associated lever may return to normal position independently and in advance ofthe key-lever, and whereby during the return of the key-lever to its normal position said trip may vibrate and resume its proper position relatively to the type-bar lever, substantially as set forth.

In a type-writing machine, the combination with a circular series of type-bars of a series of rods attached at one end to the typebars and at the other end toa series of operating-levers, the lower ends of the rods be- A ing arranged in a straight line, and a series of key-levers separably connected to said type-bar-ope atinglevers, substantially as set forth. 1
