Be it known that we, ARTHUR A'. REASER and JOSEPH H. MCLAUGHLIN, citizens of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska,

have invented a new and useful Coin-Controlled Receptacle, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in coin-controlled receptacles.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of coin-controlled receptacles and to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive one designed to be mounted on the backs of the seats of a theater or other place of amusement, designed to contain a box of confectionery or other article to be sold or rented, and capable of being readily opened-to obtain access to its contents when a coin of the proper denomination is deposited into it.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a coin-controlled receptacle constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a central transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one end of the device, the casing being broken away.

Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures ofthe drawings.

1 designates a casing constructed of suitable material, provided with a iiat back, bottom, and ends, and having its front and top continuously curved. The casing, which is designed to be secured tothe back of a theater-seat, is provided with transverse partitions 2 and 3, forming a central compartment 4 for the reception of a box of confectionery 0r any other article which is designed to be either sold or rented, and the space between the transverse partitions and the ends of the casing form end compartments and receive the operating mechanism.

The front of the casing is provided with an opening affording access to the central or main compartment and the contents thereof,

and the casing is normally closed bya curved door 5, arranged on the inner face of the continuously-curved front and top of the casing and provided at its ends with radially-disposed arms 6 and '7, which are arranged Within the end compartments and centrally pivoted to the transverse partitions. The transverse partitions have curved front and upper edges, which are separated from the inner face of the continuously-curved front and top sufficiently to provide a space in which the curved cover slides. 1

\Vhen the curved door is released by the means hereinafter described, it is automatically opened by springs S, mounted on pivots 9 of the arms 6 and 7 and connected with the latter by engaging projections 10 thereof.

The casing is provided atits top with a coinslot 11, and it has mounted in it a coin-tube 12, which is disposed at a slight inclination and which extends downward from the slot 11 to the bottom of the casing to a similar slot 13. The coin-tube, which forms a chute for coins, is provided at the inner edge of its lower end with an opening 14, adjacent to which is arranged a depending arm 15 of a spring-actuated coin-operated lever 16. The spring-actuated coin-operated lever 16, which is disposed substantially horizontally, is substantially L-shaped and has one arm fulcrume'd on the coin-chute between perforated ears 17. Its other arm is arranged to engage a'lug 18 of the arm 6 of the door, and it is held in such engagement when the door is closed by a spring 19, secured at its upper end to the coin-chute and having its lower end engaging the lever. The lug 18 forms an upper shoulder, and its lower face is beveled to enable it to engage the coin-operated lever automatically when the door is closed. A spring-actuated push-bar 20 is arranged at the outer edge of the coin-chute and is adapted, when a coin is located in the chute, to be forced inward against the action of the spring 21 to cause the coin to engage the depending arm 15 of the lever lt, whereby the latter is Withdrawn from engagement with the lug 18 to permit the door t-o open. The push-bar, which extends through an opening of the adjacent end of the casing, consists of a head mounted in a sleeve 22 and a shank extending through a tubular extension of the IOO sleeve and adapted, when the push-bar isv be secured in a position over the slot by asuitable padlock or other fastening device. A depending flange 24c is arranged at one end of the slot '13 and is adapted to extend through a bifurcation of the bar 23 when the latter is closed in order that the shackle of a padlock may lock the bar 23 in its closed position.

The door is provided at its lower edge with an eXteriorly-arran ged lug 25, forming'a finger-piece to enable the door to be readily closed, and the casing is provided at the top of the door-openin g with a recess 26, receiving the lug 25 when the door is open. A cushion 27 is arranged at the recess 26 and consists of a strip oi'v rubber arranged within a groove extendingaround the recess andpreferably formed by a substantially U -shaped plate 28, secured to the outer face of the easing.

Itwill be seen that the coin-controlled receptacle is exceedingly simple in construct-ion, that it is positive and reliable in operation, andthat it is adaptedto contain an artic-le to be `either sold or rented, and is capable of affording access to the same when a coinof` the proper denomination is deposited into it.

In a device of the class described, the combination oi a casing having acontin-` nous curved front and top, transverse partitions, a curved door provided with radial arms pivoted to the partitions, springs mounted on the pivots and connected with the arms for automatically opening the door, a coin-chute arranged within the casing, a beveled lug mounted on the adjacent arm, a spring-'actuated coin-operated lever fulcruined on the coin-chute and arranged toengage the said lug, and a push-bar located at the opposite side of the t'ront chute, substantially as de'- scribed.
