SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,460, dated J anuaryl 1 9, 1897.

Be it known that I, EDWARD M. COLE, a citizen of the United States, :residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Insoles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in the class of insoles for welted shoes; and my object is to dispense with the requirement for an insole of the expensive sole-leather hitherto more commonly used for the purpose, and at the same time provide a construction of insole having the lip upon it for holding the stitches, which, though made of a much cheaper quality of thin leather, shall possess in a high degree the important attributes of flexibility, strength, and lightness.

To this end the present invention consists of an improved insole formed and constructed as hereinafter more specifically set forth and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of an insole constructed in accordance with my improvement 5 and Fig. 2 is a section taken at the line 2 on Fig. l, viewed in the direction of the arrow and enlarged.

A is the blank for my improved insole, formed in the desired shape of comparatively cheap, thin, and flexible leather.

B is the lip, formed thereon by cutting in- Ward to a desired depth about the edges of the blank in advance of the heel portion and turning up to or approximately to a right angle the material cut away, thus affording the feather fr about the outer side of the lip. Upon the lipped surface of the blank I then apply a reinforcingcovering C, of the desired insole shape, of thin leather, canvas, or the like, which is cemented in place by the use of a suitable cement, such as rubber cement, and a portion of this material is molded or indented about the lip B to conform to the latter and cover it snugly, thereby reinforcingit.

The reinforcing-covering C is secured to the central portion of the bottom of the blank A and terminates upon and is secured to the bottom of the feather 7".

The insole thus provided is cheap to manufacture, desirably flexible, light, and strong, and the reinforcement afforded to the otherwise inadequately strong lip renders it .as strongras need be for holding the stitches without so stiffening it as to preclude turning it inward and iiattening it down against the surface of the insole to obviate the discomfort which the lip would cause to the foot of the wearer.

Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As an improved article of manufacture, an insole comprising a body of leather, a lip and feather formed by splitting the outer edge of the body in the usual manner, and a continuous reinforcing-covering secured to the central portion of the bottom of the sole, indented over the lip, and terminating upon and secured to the bottom of the feather upon opposite sides of the sole, substantially as described.
