SEWING-MACHINE EXTENSION-TABLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,344, dated January 19, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J AMES G. GREENE, a citizen of the United States,residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Extension- Tables, of which the following is a specification,reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

In sewing together long lengths of heavy goods,like carpets, sails, &c.,on ordinary sewing-machines much difficulty has been experienced in handling the heavy work so that it could be properly fed to the stitch-forming mechanism of the machine, and this difficulty has been more particularly experienced when the heavy goods are of considerable width. My invention has for its object to obviate this difficulty, and this I accomplish by providing the sewing-machine stand or table with an extension work-support which is preferably in the form of a folding table. or stand provided at its edges with rollers mainly support ing the weight of the goods, and which antifriction work-supporting extension-table is preferably provided with means whereby it may quickly be attached to or detached from the sewing-machine stand or table. The work-supporting rollers at the edges of the extension-table are preferably made longerthan the extension, so as partly to overhang the sewing-machine stand, and thereby support the work resting on the table, as well as that part of the Work resting on the extension.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side View of a portion of a sewing-machine stand with my improved extension-table applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view illustrating the manner of supporting the heavy work, and Fig. 4: is a detail view of the detachable connection A denotes the top or table proper of the sewing-machine stand.

B is the work-supporting extension-table, provided at its opposite edges with the rollers b, journaled at their outer ends in plates 0 (preferably recessed into the outer end of the table B) and at their inner ends by the upturned parts of metal brackets 0', attached to the lower side of the table B, said plates and brackets having suitable bearings for the journals of the rollers b, and the latter are preferably of greater length than the said table B, so as to overhang the table A to a point 5 5 just beyond the needle and feed, as more clearly shown in Fig. 1.

The extension-table B is preferably sup ported at its inner end by brackets 0, attached to the table A and engaged by lugs or ears b,

From the foregoing it will be readily uncan be readily moved forward without objectionable side draft in feeding the same to the stitch-forming mechanism of the sewingmachine.
