SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,834, dated January 5, 189'?.

To all whom it ntay concern' Be it known that I, PATRICK M. TOBIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmira, in the county of Chemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,-

clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a novel construction of what are known as air-boxes and it consists in the features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, Figure is a vertical longitudinal section of this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

Referring nowto said drawings, 1 indicates the box, which is sunk into the ground and rests upon a suitable stone foundation and is provided near its upper end with a horizontal partition 2, dividing said box into two compartments. The upper end of said box is provided with a cover 3, hinged at one side to the upper edge of the box and provided at another side with a hasp fi to be engaged by a springlock 5. The said lock is situated within the box and is adapted to be unlocked by a key passed through the end of the box. At this end of the box is the auxiliary compartment G, of the same width as the box 1 and adapted to be closed by the cover 7, hinged to the cover 3. In this way it will be seen that the auxiliary compartment 6, in which the key is placed, is protected from the elements. At the opposite side of the upper compartment S of the box 1 is a pipe or passage 9, communicatingwith the air-compressor and provided inside the said compartment 8 with a valve 10, said valve communicatingwith a hose 11, having a coupling 12. At the end of the box at which the lock is placed is an open-end slot 13, opening at the upper end of the box. This slot 13 is intended for the passage of the hose 14 and when not in use is closed by means of the grooved plate 15. At the outer end of the auxiliary compartment 6 is a pivoted arm 16, by means of which the outer end of the cover 7 can be held slightly elevated, a stop 17 being situated to hold said arm 16, as shown in the drawings.

These boxes are usually situated within the vyards of railroads where the brakes of the cars are tested by the inspectors. When not being used, the covers are closed, but when it is desired to test the brake of a car the cover 7 is first raised and then the cover 3 unlocked. The brake-line of the car is then attached to the hose 11 by means of the hose 14. This hose 14 passes through the slot 13 in the end of the box, whereupon the cover 3 can be closed, and when the'cover 7 is held slightly opened by the pivoted arm 16 the hose can pass out below this last-named cover.

These boxes can be placed at desired intervals and are usually sunk into the ground so that their upper ends stand iiush with the upper face of the rail of the track. By reason of the box being sunk in the earth in the manner shown and provided with a close-fitting locked cover and an auxiliary cover the entrance of dirt, snow, or rain into the box and freezing is effectually prevented.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A device of the kind specied consisting of a casing having a horizontal partition between its upper and lower ends, an auxiliary chamber at the upper end portion of said casing, a hinged cover for said casing, a cover for said auxiliary chamber hinged to said casing-cover, and an opening in the upper end of the wall between said casing and auxiliary chamber.

2. A box of the kind specified consisting of a casing having a horizontal partition, a hinged cover upon the upper end of said casing, a lock for said cover, a slot in the end of said casing adjacent to said lock, an auxiliary chamber at one end of said box, a cover 7 hinged to said main cover, and a pipe or passage entering the upper end portion of said casing near the other end thereof `and pro vided with a valve and coupling.
