SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,378, dated January 5, 1897.

Application filed December 28, 1895. Serial No. 573,594. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J ENNIE -L. BORNSTEIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention is an improvement in sanitary supports; and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one form in which I have contem' plated embodying my invention, and said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.

The object of my invention is to provide a support adapted to hold the cloths or other articles by which the menstrual flow is absorbed, and which may also be employed in cases of illness to receive the discharge from the bladder, the said holder being constructed so as to protect the person and the clothing of the wearer, and also to facilitate the insertion and removal of the cloths.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan View of my improved support. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 represents a transversev sectional view.

The material which I employ in making my improved support is rubber or rubber and cloth. In forming my support I take an oblong piece A of this material and fold the longitudinal edges C over upon the main portion, as shown. I then fold the portions at each end of the piece adjacent to the corners over to the center where the edges of the opposite corner-pieces B B lie parallel, as at b. The edges 0 are then tacked by sewing to the adjacent portions of the corner-pieces B B, as indicated, and themeeting edges 1) are united by stitching at the points I) b (indicated on the drawings) at the opposite ends of said edges, so that an opening is left between these meeting edges 11, while they are secured together at b. This construction forms a flat sack having an oblong opening in the center of its upper side and provided at each end with a central slit or opening between the edges of the corner-pieces.

In order to hold the longitudinal turnedover edges 0 in proper position, I provide suitable retaining devices therefor consisting, in this instance, of straps E E, each of which is connected to the opposite edges 0 0, thereby retaining them in position. 7

At each end of the device I provide a loop G, secured to the main portion of the device, so that the support can be held in position by means of suitable straps or by attaching said loops to some part of the clothing of the wearer.

In operation the cloth or other device which is used to absorb the fluid is passed within the device beneath the straps E E and the overlying edges 0, and the ends of such cloth will extend through the slit between the meeting edges 1), which will tend to hold the cloth in position. It will be observed that the device will protect the person of the wearer and being of waterproof material it will also protect the clothing or bed-clothing from being soiled by the discharged fluid.

hen the cloth is to be removed, one of the ends which projects through the slit 1), and which will not ordinarily be soiled, can be seized and the cloth drawn longitudinally through the device, thus avoiding the handling of the soiled portions of the cloth in removing it.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A sanitary support consisting of a piece of waterproof material having its longitudi-- nal edges folded inwardly and its corner por-- tions folded inwardly and secured to said folded edges, to form an elongated sack hav ing a central opening in one side, the meeting edges of said folded corner portions being secured together at widely-separated points, forming a longitudinal slit between them, in line with but exterior to said central opening, substantially as described.

2.
