CANT-HOOK FOR LUMBERMEN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,844, dated December 22, 1896.

Be it known that I,-JAMEs M. ELLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cant-Hooks for Lumbermen; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to cant-hooks or dogs for lumbermen, and the object is to provide a simple, cheap, and convenient device of this kind that automatically adjusts itself to logs of diiferent sizes; and to this end the novelty consists inthe construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings the same numerals of reference indicate the same parts of the invention.

Figure l is a perspective View of my improved cant-hook or dog. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section, of the same.

1 is the handle or lever, and 2 is a metallic strap encompassing the handle and secured thereto by a bolt 3', passing through the ears or lugs 4 4 of the strap and through a hole 5 in the handle, which securely clamps the strap to the handle and prevents the strap turning sidewise or slipping up or down on the handle. The outer ends of the ears 4 4 are provided with a bolt 6, which passes through them, and it forms the fulcrum for the lever-hook 7, the lower end 8 of which is formed with an orifice 9, to which is secured one end of a spiral spring 10, the other end of which is secured to a hook 12, having a pin 12, which engages the coils on the end of the spring.

Plate 13 lies flat on the plane side 14 of the handle 1 and is secured thereto by a hook 15, riveted to the plate and passing under the Serial No. 593,332. (No model.)

bolt 3, and its front end 16 forms an anvil 17, on which the lower front angular toe 18 of the lever-hook 7 strikes, and which serves to limit the forward play of the hook.

A set-screw 19 is secured in the handle 1, and its end comes in contact with the under side of the forward end of the plate 13, which can be adjusted outwardly by the set-screw, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, to regulate the play of the angular toe 18 of the lever-hook to correspond to the diameter of the logs being handled.

20 represents a sheet-metal casing which incloses the spiral spring and protects it when the cant-hook isin use. It will thus be seen that I provide a cant-hook forlumbermen that is self-adjusting when applied to the logs, and the hook itself will automatically take hold of the log, whatever its diameter may be, as will be fully understood from the drawings.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. A cant-hook or dog comprising a handle provided with a plane side and a bolt-hole, in combination with an encompassing strap secured thereto by a bolt passing through said bolt-hole, and having its ears or lugs provided with a bolt on which is fulcrumed a leverhook, formed with a front angular toe, and an anvil-plate secured to the plane side of the handle, and formed with an integral hook to engage one end of a spiral spring, the other end of which is secured to the lower end of the lever-hook opposite its toe, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A cant-hook or dog comprising a handle 1 having a plane side 14: and a transverse hole 5, and an adjusting set-screw 19, in combination with the strap 2, bolts 3 and 6, on the lat ter of which is fulcrumed the lever-hook 7 having an angular toe 18 and provided with a spiral spring 10, one end-of which is secured to the hook 12 on the plate 13, the forward end of which forms an anvil for the angular toe 18 of the lever-hook 7, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. A cant-hook or dog comprising a handle 1 having a plane side 14, an adj Listing-screw 10, and a transverse hole 5, in combination with the strap 2, bolts 3 and 6, the latter of which forms a fulcrum for the lever-hook 7 the plate 13 provided With a hook 12 passing 10 around the bolt 3, and having a hooked end to which is secured the spiral spring 10 0011- nected to the lever-hook 7, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
