UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. A. MILLER, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
RAILWAY-CAR WH EEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,519, dated December 22, 1896.
Application filed September 24, 1896. Serial No. 606,816. No model.)
reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in railway-car wheels; and the object of my invention is to provide a car-wheel divided into two independent parts, one part of which is adapted to rotate with the wheels axle and the other part is adapted to rotate or revolve upon a roller-bearing formed on the periphery of the firstnamed part. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical horizontal section of the wheel on line 0 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the central disk portion.
Similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to Fig. 1, A designates a carwheel axle. Upon it, adjacent to its bearing end, I key the inner disk portion B of the wheel with a key 0. I arrange the key so that it will not extend beyond either side of the disk and fit it loosely in the keyway of the side flange D. This flange D is detachably secured to one side of the disk by machine-screws E in order that it may be readily removed to insert or remove the rollers.
The periphery of the disk is turned to form a flange F flush with one side of it and a portion D of less diameter adjacent to it, which forms the tread for the rollers G. The heads of the screws E are countersunk into the flange D until they come flush with its side. The periphery of the flange F is made the same diameter as the periphery of the flange D of the disk. Between these two flanges and on the reduced portion between them I arrange side by side around its circumference enough rollers G of a suitable diameter to completely occupy it. The rollers are made of the best material for this purpose and are fitted to fill closely but freely between the flanges. The tread portion H of the wheel is cast solid on the flange side I of the wheel to its axial core, but on the side J opposite from its treadflange it has a concentric recess K cast into it. This is bored out to receive the disk and rollers, the latter of which should bear against the periphery of the recess. The disk and rollers are placed laterally in the recess and against the bottom of it. A side flange L, which is turned to the same diameter as the wheels tread, is then bolted to its side and confines the disk in the recess. The disk portion is fitted to rest snugly but freely between the two sides of the tread portion. The axial hole N through the side flange L is also fitted snugly butloosely to the shaft in order to keep the dust from working too freely into the rollers. M designates an oil-hole through the flange L, through which the rollers may be oiled. As the wheel rotates its tread portion rotates on the rollers and the rollers roll round the disk, which being fixed to the shaft rotates with it, as the axle is always revolubly supported in suitable boxes,
My improved car-wheel will run very easy. It will take a large portion of the wear and strain from the axle. It will also be stopped quicker and easier with a brake, and it is less liable to crystallize and break than solid wheels.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination in a car-wheel, of the axle, the disk keyed thereto and having an annular reduced portion or groove in its periphery, a circular row of rollers therein, a tread and flange portion arranged to fit centrally over said disk portion and to rotate on said rollers, and side flanges to said tread and flange portion, one of which is removable, and extending from said tread portion freely over said disk and fitting revolubly on said axle, whereby said tread portion is independent of said axle and rotates on the rollerbearing of said disk portion and the disk por tion and axle are free to rotate independent of the tread portion of said Wheel, substantially as described.
2. In a car-wheel the combination with the axle and the disk wheel, of a Wheel having a tread and flange fitting freely on said axle,
.an integral solid side on the flange side of the wheel, a deep concentric recess formed in the opposite side and adapted to fit over said disk, a reduced tread portion in the periphery of said disk, at flanged portion on said disk adjacent to the wheels flange, a circular row of rollers arranged to roll on the tread of \Vitnesses GRACE P.
