IMPROVEMENT IN HEAD-DRESSES FOR LADIES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,328, dated August 21, 1866.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HANNAH SOPHIA C. IWERSON, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Head- Dresses for Ladies; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specication, wherein- Figure 1 is a profile representing my im proved head-dress as in place in the hair of a female, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the foundation-piece of said head-dress.

The hair upon the head of many females is so thin that it is not sufficient to spread out and put up tastefully. Hence separate braids and false curls are often attached,l either by tying the braid to the hair at the back of the head, or by means of a comb. In the rstnamed mode the braid of hair does not commingle uniformly with the natural hair, and the two generally have to be plaited or twisted up separately, and the artificial curls areu apt to become detached.

My invention obviates all the foregoing difficulties; and it consists in an open foundationpiece to which the false hair or braid `is attached, said foundation-piece being sufficiently thin to set close to the head and be covered by the natural hair combed over it and uniting with the .braid of artificial hair, so that the same is not only held permanently in place, but the appearence externally is the same as if all the hair were natural, and the natural hair and the braid or length of hair thus added can be combed out together without disturbing the foundationfpiece that carries the artificial braid.

In the drawings, a represents the natural hair of a lady, combed back in any desired or usual style. b is the foundation-piece for the artificial braid or length of hair, said foundation-piece being of the proper size and shape, usually about two and a-half inches in diameter, with an opening in the middle, as represented in Fig. 2; and I prefer that velvet or plush be employed for such foundation, and that the same be stiffened by wires around the same and cross-wires, as shown in Fig. 2 by dotted lines.

The hair is to be sewed to this foundation in any usual manner, so that the hairs will not pull out in combing.

The braid or lengthof hair is to be applied as aforesaid, the foundation b being placed against the head when the natural hair is combed aside, and then the artificial hair is held in place by combing the natural hair over the said foundation, as illustrated in Fig. 1.

If the foundation b is provided with crosswires, as seen in Fig. 2, srrin gs maybe attached to them for tying back the side hair, as the same may be rolled or otherwise put up; or to these Wires a cushion or other similar' device, over which the hair may be spread, as in what is known as water-falls, may be attached to these cross-wires.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The foundation-piece b, carrying the length or braid of hair and fitted in the manner specified, so as to be introduced within the natural hair, for the purposes and as set forth.
