POTATO-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,099, dated December 15, 1896. Application filed May 23,1896. Serial No. 592,714.. on model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAKAYE MIKAMI, a subject of the Mikado of Japan, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Potato-Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to vegetable cutters or mashers, and more particularly to a potatoslicer.
The object of the present invention is the provision of an extremely simple, cheap, and superior slicer especially adapted for cutting potatoes into small pieces suitable for frying.
The invention consists of certain peculiar features and combinations which will appear more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the slicer open; Fig. 2, a sectional side elevation showing the slicer closed, and Fig. 3 a plan view of the removable slicing frame and knives.
A and B designate a pair of levers provided with handles 1 and 2, respectively, and hinged together at 3. The lower member carries a square compression-box 4, curved in the arc of a circle. This box is open at the top, but is provided with a bottom, now to be described.
A removable square frame 5 is adapted for connection to the compression-box by fastening devices 6. This frame fits the sides of said box snugly and its bottom is formed of fixed parallel sets of slicing-knives 'Z and 8, having their edges upward.
These sets of knives cross each other in the manner shown, thereby providing square openings 9.
A square plunger 10, curved in the arc of a circle, is connected to the upper lever A by a screw 11 and is adapted to fit snugly the compression-box when lowered thereinto. For the sake of lightness this plunger may be made of tin or other suitable sheet metal.
The invention is used in the following manner: The potatoes are-put into the compression-box and the upper lever rocked so as to force the plunger into the box. As pressure is exerted on the potatoes they are cut up into slices by the knives and fall through the openings onto a plate over which the device should be used.
The framework carrying the knives can be removed and replaced by another having smaller or larger openings, so that slices or cuttings of any desired size can be obtained.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is- In a potato slicer, the combination with handle-levers hinged together, of a curved compression-box connected to one lever and open at the top, a removable bottom for said compression-box which bottom consists of an open frame and series of cutting-knives crossing each other in the form of a grating, and a curved plunger connected to the other handle-lever and adapted for insertion in the compression-box; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAKAYE MIKAMI. Witnesses MARY K. MAXWELL, MABEL O. CRAFT.
