UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HIItAM DILLAWAY, OF SANDWICH, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED GLASS-PRESS.
Speoication forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,296. dated August 21, 1866.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM DILLAWAY, of Sandwich, in the county of Barnstable and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Glass-Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to malte and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention consists, first, in a novel arrangement of parts for operating and moving the plunger or follower 4and obtaining the requisite degree of pressure upon the glass Within the mold; second, in so arranging the mold that it can be moved into or out of the line of movement of the plunger or follower, the mechanism employed to accomplish which is susceptible of adjustment to accommodate the various sizes of molds; third, in so ai ranging the plunger or follower that when such portion of the same as is to cover the mold is over and upon it, it will be there tightly and tirmly held while the plunger or follower is acting upon the inside of the molda result of great importance.
Having thus in general terms stated the principal features of the present invention, I will now proceed to describe the same in detail, together with other minor improvements involved in the press, reference being had to the accompanying plates of drawings, in Which- Figure l, Plate l, is an elevation of the rear side of a glass-press constructed according to my invention 5 Fig. 2, Plate 1, an elevation of one side of the same; Fig. 3, Plate 2, a verti cal section taken in the plane of the line x m, Fig. 1, Plate 1; Fig. 4, Plate 2, a horizontal section taken in the plane of the line y y, Fig. 1, Plate lg'and Fig. 5, Plate 3, a horizontal section taken in the plane of the line z z, Fig. 1, Plate l.

A in the drawings represents the table or bed-plate of the press, which, at each corner, is supported or rests upon the upper ends of posts B, that, at their lower ends, are connected together and braced by horizontal bars C, and also set or mounted on Wheels or rollers D, for convenience in moving the press about from place to place.
To the upper side of the table are xed two parallel upright posts or rods, E E, that are connected together by a cross bar or head, F, near their upper ends, Gr, a vertical screw spindle or shaft passing loosely through the center of the fixed cross-head F, and also through cross-heads H and I, one above and the other below the fixed cross-head F, arranged to move up and down upon the uprights E E, hereinbefore referred to.
The upper cross-head, H, is confined or held on the spindle G between two screw-nuts, J J, one above and the other below the cross-head, by means of which the position of the said cross-head upon the spindle can be adjusted at pleasure.
The lower cross-head, I, rests upon the projecting dan ge K of the spindle, to which flange it is secured by bolting, riveting, or in any other proper manner.
The lower end, L, of the spindle Gr forms the plunger or follower for the mold, and is to be made of such shape as may be necessary for the mold used.
M is a horizontal head-plate on spindle G, which is held between two screw-nuts, N N, one above and the other below it. From each of the four corners of this plate M parallel vertical rods o extend, which rods are of equal length, two upon each side of the cross-heads, with the Lipper ends of those rods upon the same side of the cross-heads secured together by cross-bars P.
The outer ends of each of the cross-bars P are connected, through vertical rods Q, with the cross head or plate R, placed below the cross-head I, which plate R is set over the plunger end of the spindle G, and plays upon the fixed uprights of the bedplate.
Between the head-plateR and the cross-bars P on the rods Q spiral springs R2 are placed, on which springs the cross-bars rest, they being held upon the said rods by means of screw-nuts S.
To each end of the upper vertical sliding cross-head, H, similar connecting-rods T T are hung, that, extending downward upon each side of the press, are hung at their lower curved ends, U U, to one end of crank-arms V Vof a common horizontal shaft, W, hung in vertical cal lever arm or handle, A2, is secured, by depressing or raising which, through the rods connecting said shaft W with the upper sliding 'cross-head, H, said` crosshead, together with the screw-spindle o n which it is placed and all the other parts connected therewith, as hereinbefore explained, are consequently lowered or raised, as the case may be, and
y thereby the plunger or follower of said spindle made to enter or to be withdrawn from the mold B2 used, which is placed upon the upper side of the bed-plate A of the press in proper position therefor, this mold being arranged in a novel manner, as will be hereinafter described, so that it can be slid into position for the plunger to enter it, or out of line with the movement of the plunger, for the purpose of removing the article molded in it.
From the above description of the connecting parts between the operating-lever A2 and the plunger or follower for the mold, and the manner in which they are arranged and combined, it is plain to be seen that when the cross head or plate R has been brought to bear upon the top of the mold, on which it comes to a rest or stop, by then continuing to depress the operating-lever tlieplunger can be made to still further enter the mold, passing through the said plate B, which, by such movement of the plunger, is firmly held, through the compression of the spiral `springs B2, by the crossarms P, moving upon the guide-rods O, thereby preventing all possibility of the cover or plate R rising from the mold. as the plunger acts in it, the importance of which is obvious.
The mold B2 is provided with a handle, A4,
' for convenience in removing it from the press.
The mold is placed upon a plate, B4, that is arranged to slide upon a dovetail tenon or strip, G4, secured to the upper side of the table or bed-plate A. To the rear side of the sliding plate B4 is. hung the inner end of ashort connecting-rod, D4, to the outer end of which is hung, by its swiveled nut E4, the lower end ot' a vertical inclined connecting-bar, F4, that ishung upon a fulcrum, G4, of the stationary projecting' arm H4 of the upper part ofthe press, and atits upper end is pivoted to one end of a short connecting arm or link, I4, arranged to slide in the horizontal groove J4 of the upright K4 of the press. To the other end of the link is hung a vertical connecting-rod,
L4, in the lower end of which turns the horizontal shaft W, hereinbefore referred to.
The rod L4 passes through the band M4, fixed to one side of a slide-bar, N4, arranged to move or slide iu the ends of standards O4, secured to one side ofthe bed-plateA.
Frein the lowerside of the slide-bar N4 e'X- tends a bent or curved arm, P4, which, by its straight portion O4, is secured in the slide-bar N4 by means of nuts R4, so that it can be adjusted to project more or less by its curved end.
S4 is an arm secured to horizontal crankshaft W, and notched at T4, which arm, as the said shaft W revolves and rises in its elongated bearings, abuts against the downward- Y projecting lug U4 ot the slide-bar`N4 and carries such bar along with it,"and through the connecting parts described slides the mold out from under the plunger, when, depressing the lever-handle A2, the said arm S4 then acts upon the shoulder or corner V4 of the curved arm P4, and again sliding the slide-bar, but in an opposite direction to that above eX- plained, moves the mold under the plunger and in positionfor being operated upon by it.
The outward and inward movement of the moldabove described is to be arranged so as to occur at the proper times with reference to the upward and downward movement of the plunger or follower.
To enable the handle or lever A2 to be changed in position upon the shaft W, to which it is secured, I employ a ratchet-clutch, X4, as plainly shown in the several figures of the drawings, whereby, as is obvious, the desired result can be secured.
Having thus described my invention, I claim y 'as new and desire to' secure by Letters Patent- 1. The plunger orfollower L, hung on a sliding head or frame moving upon guides E E, and connected, through rods U, with crankarms of a shaft, W, arranged in slotted bearings, to the opposite ends of which crank-arms rods z are connected at one end, and at ltheir other hung upon fixed pivots X, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
2. The mold B4, arranged and connected with the shaft for operating the plunger in such a manner as to be moved under and away from the line of movement of the plunger, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The head-plates M and R, rods O and Q, cross-bars P, springs R2, when all arranged and connected together and to the plunger so as to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
