UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES XVIDMER, SR., OF BROOKLYN, NElV YORK.
GAME-COUNTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,920, dated December 8, 1896.
Application filed March 19, 1896. Serial No. 583,905. (No modeLl To ctZZ- whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES \VIDMER, Sr. a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Counters, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a counter suitable for various purposes, as, for example, for a combination penuchle counter and melding or announcing tablet, as also for other games or counts, as will presently more fully appear; and the invention resides in the novel features of construction'set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan View of a counter. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a modification.
The base or support A carries the counter for one side or player and is practically jointed, as at B, to another such support (not shown) carrying the counter for the other side or player.
On the support A are two fields O and D, the field O being for announcing or melding, and the field D is for counting.
Field O has a number-row E, carrying numbers, as, for example, 10, 20, and so on up to 300. Said field C also has guides or ways F, along which can be moved sliding or traveling buttons or markers G. Supposing a player announces twenty, he slides or displaces a suitable marker, as indicated at G, along a number-column to register the announcement.
The counting-field D has a number-row II, forming heads for columns thereby suitably numbered, as by 10, 100, 200, and so on up to D00. Said field D also has guides or ways I, provided with the'movable markers K, and a number-row L, along which runs guide M, provided with the movable index N.
The markers K are numbered, as, for example, by 10, 20, and so on up to 90.
At the end of the game or hand a player counting his points and adding thereto the announcements registered in field O finds, for example, that his total amounts to 351. This total is registered by sliding the marker K, numbered 50, into column headed 2300, thereby registering 000, the remain ing 1 being indicated by moving index N from 0 to 1, thus showing the total, (4 351.77
The game, or one thousand points, as understood, can be marked or noted by moving marker 9O across the number-columns into column DUO, thus indicating 990, and the moving of index N to number 10 indicates the remainder, making up the game, or 1,000, while if said index N is left, for example, at number 5 the sum indicated is 995, or five short of game.
This device does away with pencil, paper, slate, and chalk and with the summing up of figures at the end of each hand, also giving parties the privilege of counting their own game or side. The melding or announcing field O enables the melds as fast as they are made to be recorded by shifting markers G without distracting the player, and after each hand the melds or announcements can be counted and added to the remaining number of points made in the play, such sum or total being then recorded in the field or counter D or D L, as explained, said field D or D L being a continuous counter up to one thousand.
Of course the device is not confined to use in connection with penuchle, as it is serviceable for other games or purposes. Neither is the device confined to the exact construction shown, as modifications can be made which are within the scope of my invention. For example, in Fig. 3 in addition to the melding and counting fields are shown an indicator or indicators consisting of numbered cylinders O, suitably rotated by handles or finger-pieces P, to show through the sightopenings Q the trump or games won or lost or other information. These revolving numbered cylinders O are serviceable, for example, in such games as euchre or whist.
The base or support A can be a shallow support for the fields O D, or said fields can be removably fitted or set into box-sections A, so as to cover the interiors of said boxsections, which latter can have compartments, as R, for cards or other articles. One or more of the outer or exposed sides of the base A or box A can be utilized as a cribbage counter or for other purposes or left IOO plain or ornamented, as seen fit, and the various parts of the device can be made of any suitable material or materials.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A counter having a field composed of numbered columns provided with movable markers to travel longitudinally of said columns, and another field composed of numbered columns provided with movable numbered markers which tray'el across the same in a plane at right angles to the line of movement of the first-mentioned markers, substantially as described.
2. A counter having a field composed of numbered columns provided with movable markers to travel longitudinally of said columns, another field composed of numbered columns provided with movable markers Which travel across the same in a plane at right angles to the line of movement of the first-mentioned markers, and an index mov able across one set of columns at one end thereof, substantially as described.
A counter, consisting of afield composed of numbered columns provided with movable markers to travel longitudinally of the same, another field composed of columns numbered at their opposite ends and provided with movable markers to travel across the same, and an index movable across one end of the lastmentioned columns to cooperate with the numbers at such end, substantially as described.
4. A counter comprising fields with numbered columns, one of said fields having markers adapted to travel along the columns and the other field having markers adapted to travel across the columns, and rotary cylinders placed outside the boundaries of the fields and provided with actuating-handles substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
