FRANKLIN BROWVN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THOMAS CUNNINGHAM, LUCIEN BROWN, GEORGE BROWTN, FRANK P. PENDLETON, AND JOHN A. S. BROWVN, OF SAME PLACE, AND IIORATIO B. LINCOLN, OF IVORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
ROD-PACKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,862, dated December 8, 1896.
Application filed April 8, 1895. Serial No. 544,916. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residingin Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Rod-Packings, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to so combine a strip of lead or other soft metal with a fibrous packing for piston-rods, valve-rods, or the like that said metal strip will not be dislodged from its proper position in respect to the fibrous portion of the packing when the outer covering of the latter has been worn away. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which--- Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view of a piece of fibrous packing provided with a soft-metal wearing-strip in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of part of the stuffing-box, showing part of a piston-rod or valve-rod in elevation and illustrating the way in which the packing is used.
The packing shown in Fig. 1 comprises opposite strips A A, triangular in cross-section and disposed point to point, the upper and lower V-shaped spaces thus formed receiving packing-strips B B, and the whole being confined within an outer braided covering D,the object of this construction of the packing being to cause lateral expansion of the strips A A to compensate for wear when pressure is I applied at top and bottom to the strips B B,
the latter being usually of softer material than the strips A A, so as to have a cushioning eifect.
For many purposes it is preferable to provide for a bearing of lead or other soft metal against the piston-rod or valve-rod, and I therefore apply a lead or soft-metal strip a to the face of one of the side strips A of the packing inside of the covering D, and in placing the packing in the stuffing-box the same is so disposed that the lead strip is adjacent to the piston-rod or valve-rod, as shown in Fig. 2, so that when the outer covering D wears away, as it soon will, the lead strip will be brought into direct contact with the rod.
In order to prevent the dislodging or displacing of the metal strip, I turn the upper and lower ends of the same inward, as shown at b, so as to cause them to embrace the upper and lower angles of the triangular strip A and project between said strip A and the upper and lower strips 13, whereby the lead strip is securely confined to said strip A and cannot get out of place.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- The combination of a fibrous packing comprising opposite triangular strips, and upper and lower cushioning-strips filling the V-.
shaped spaces between said triangular strips, with a soft-metal face-plate applied to the inner triangular strip and having its upper and lower portions bent inward at an acute angle and engaging the angles of said triangular side strip, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANKLIN BROWN. Witnesses:
WILL. A. BARR, FRED O. BENNER.
