BAROMETER. V
No.-57Z,536. Patented Dec. 8, 1896.

IVILLIAM T. FLOURNOY, OF MARIONVILLE, MISSOURI.
BAROME'IER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,536, dated December 8, 1896.
Application filed August 10, 1896. Serial No. 602,359. (No model.)
' T at whom it may concern:
barometers, the object of which is to so arrange the contents of a barometer that its quick or sudden change of pressure previous to a tornado, cyclone, hurricane, or severe local storm will ring a bell or sound an alarm. This may be accomplished in various ways, but I prefer the device and mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is a longitudinal vertical section of a barometer, showing an attachment for accomplishing this object.
My invention is a tornado, cyclone, and storm indicator. It has been observed that the barometer changes suddenly or rapidly immediately prior to a storm that has great force.
My invention permits the ordinary changes in the atmosphere without sounding an alarm,
but if the change is rapid, indicating the near approach of a severe storm, the object of this invention is to sound an alarm or ring a bell, which may be accomplished by various devices. companying drawing, in which- A is an ordinary barometer. I prefer an enlargement A of the tube, having the vacuum for making a greater movement in the barometer.
B is a secondary tube connected by a tube C with a very small hole or opening 0 Tube 0 may be formed into a siphon (3 for attaching to any ordinary barometer. The tube B may be made as large as desired and also the opening 0 in the connection C or 0 so as I prefer the one illustrated in the acto cause the fluid in tube A and tube B to remain of equal or nearly equal height in ordinary changes of the weather; but the tube B is made of sufficient size and the opening 0 so small that in case of a sudden atmospheric change, as that immediately preceding a storm, the fluid in tube B will move very slowly compared with that in tube A This variation in the tubes A and B, when sufficient in amount to indicate a storm approaching, may be indicated by any suitable device to set off an alarm.
I use floats A and B in each of the tubes A and B and connect them with wires D D On one is a fork E, 011 the other a tongue E In normal or ordinary changes in the atmosphere they move up and down together, but in sudden changes float B moves so slowly compared with float A that the tongue E will come in contact with the fork E, and said fork and tongue are properly charged with electricity, so as to ring an alarm when the points meet as stated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A barometer having two surfaces which move in the same direction one more rapidly than the other in case of quick changes of atmospheric pressure. I
2. A barometer having two surfaces combined with a connecting-tube having a small orifice and electrical-bell wires connecting with floats upon the surface substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In combination with a barometer a second tube, B, connected with a tube, 0, having a small orifice, and floats, A and B connected with wires D D having a fork E, and a tongue, E all substantially as shown and described for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
