APPARATUS FOR REGULATlNG TEMPERATURE OF COMBUSTION'CHAMBERS AND VAPORIZERS 0F PETROLEUM-MOTORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,499, dated December 1, 1896. Application filed February 24, 1896. Serial No. 580,309. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL CAPITAINE, a subject of the King of Prussia, Emperor of Germany, residing at Leipsic, Saxony, Germany, have made new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Regulating the Temperature of Combustion-Chambers and Vaporizers of Petroleum-Motors, of which the following is a clear and exact specification. 7
My invention relates to petroleum-gasand other like engines, and has for its object to provide automatic mechanism for regulating the temperature of the combustion-chamber in such engines, and alsoof' the vaporizingchamber when gas derived from petroleum or naphtha is the source of the motive power. It is well known that the temperature of the walls of the combustion-chamber and of the vaporizer in a petroleum-motor should be constant; and it has been usual to vaporize the petroleum in the hot combustion-chamber of the motor as well as to vaporize it in a separate vaporizing chamber heated by means exterior to the walls thereof. The mechanism devised by me and hereinafter described is applicable for regulating the temperature of the walls of the combustion-chamber as well as the walls of the separate vaporizing-chamber; and my invention consists of mechanism hereinafter described for automatical. y regulating the temperature of either or both chambers.
In the drawings illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a View, partially in vertical section and'partially in side elevation, showing an apparatus embodying the invention and its application to a combustion chamber. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a modified form of the water-controlling mechanism.
A well is indicated at A,which is filled with metal or alloy of metal and is located contiguous to or integral with a hot wall of the combustion-chamber or of the heated vaporizer. The metal or the alloy to be employed is one the fusing-point of which corresponds to the temperature at which it is desired that the combustion-chamber and vaporizer shall be maintained. A rod B is inserted in the alloy, (indicated at K,) and preferably the end A of this rod is bent, as shown in the drawings, for the purpose of increasing the resistance when the alloy hardens, and so prevent it turning in the hardened alloy. The rod 13 is journaled in a supporting-frame O, which is provided with a sleeve-like extension 0. On the upper end of the rod B is secured a disk D, which serves as a means to reciprocate it in the arc of a circle, and se cured to the disk D is an arm E, (see Fig. 2,) which is vibrated, when in operation, by means of the rod E,whieh presses against the lever-arm E,while the spring G', between the lever-arm and the bracket E of the frame, tends to always bring the arm E back to its normal position. The rod F is reciprocated bymeans of actuating devices driven by the engine piston-rod and its usual connections. The frame 0 is supplied with a bracket-arm E, in which the rod F is maintained. A bell R is securedto the sleeve 0 and is struck by abell-clapper r, mounted on the rod E,when said rod has motion imparted to it by the disk D, arm E, spring G, and rod F, acting in concert on the fusing of the alloy K in the Well A, which occurs when the temperature of the walls of the contiguous or integral combustion-chamber or vaporizer rises to the melting-point thereof.
A piston-rod S is pivotally fastened by a pin a to the disk D. and operates a slide-valve M in a water-controlling device M, the slidevalve being slotted at n and the device M having opposite openings at m for water-pipe connections leading from the water supply to the usual Water-cooling chambers or jackets surrounding the combustion-chamber or vaporizer of the engine.
In Fig. 3 is shown a modification of the water-controlling device, in which the rod S isattached to a piston X, working in an airpump X, the latter having inlet and outlet openings 00 and 09 the latter communicating with a pipe Z, opening into a cylinder N, containin g a piston N, the latter working against spring P and having a rod N adapted to actuate a check-valve V in a water-supply connection \V. The air-opening 'i in the cylinder N will limit the motion of the piston. Obviously the water will pass through the latter when the check-valve is depressed, which motion is communicated through the mechanism described and is initiated by the movement of the rod S and disk D. The water thus delivered is led to the usual watercooling chambers or jackets of the combustion-chamber or vaporizer of the engine.
The operation of the actuating mechanism (shown more in detail in Fig. 3) is as follows: The rod F is set in forward and backward motion by the piston-rod of the engine through appropriate connecting mechanism, and hence when the alloy in the containing vessel is in a molten condition then the rod B will be free and the disk D will be capable of partial rotation-and the rod Fwill press the arm E to the left, and when the rod F makes its return stroke the spring G will retract the arm E and keep the disk in motion, and hence the sliding valve M of Fig. 1 or the checkvalve V of Fig. 3 is alternately opened and shut and permits during short intervals cold air or cold water to flow to the cooling-jacket of the combustion-chamber or of the vaporizer. As soon as, however, the alloybegins to slowly congcal it comes into a mushy condi tion, and when in this state the spring G is no longer able to pull the arm E back and the latter is therefore left finally in the position shown in the drawings, which is its normal position and the position in which the slide-valve M or the check-valve V is closed. Finally, themovement of the rod B will cause the striker r to contact with the signal-bell R and sound an alarm, notifying the engineer of the action of the parts as described.
controlling devices actuated bythe partial rotation of the disk, spring mechanism to reciprocate the disk in one direction, and mechanism actuated by the engine to reciprocate.
the disk in the opposite direction; substantially as described.
2. The combination with engines of the character described, and with devices adapted to supplya cooling current of water or air thereto, of mechanism operating automatically to actuate said water or air supplying devices consisting of a chamber integral with or cor tiguous to the chamber to be cooled, a readil; fusible metal therein, a rod immersed by on end in said metal, a disk mounted on the rod connecting actuating devices between the disk and the water-supplying devices, and
means to actuate the disk when such actuation is permitted by the melting of the fusibh metal; substantially as described.
3. In an engine of the class described, tlu combination of a tank or receptacle contiguous to or integral with the wall of the chamber to be cooled, and containing easily-fusible material, means for supplying a cooling fluid to said wall, valve mechanism controlling said supply, and a device partially immersed in said fluid and operati vely connected with said valve mechanism, said device being arranged to be operated by a moving part of the engine While said material is in a fused state, and to be rendered inactive by the hardening of said material, substantially as specified.
4:. The combination in engines of the character described, of a chamber A, fusible metal contained therein, a rod B,a supporting-frame 0, having sleeve 0, a disk D mounted on the rod B and having an arm E, a bracket E, on the frame, a spring Gr between the arm E and bracket E, a rod F driven by the engine and adapted to contact the arm E when it shall be released by the melting of the fusible metal, a cold water or air supplying device, and connecting actuating devices between the same and the disk D; substantially as described.
5. The combination in engines of the character described, of a chamber integral with or contiguous to the chamber to be cooled, and containing readily-fusible metal of actuating devices governed thereby, that is to say, will be actuated when such fusible metal is molten and will otherwise be normally quiescent, and water-supplying mechanism controlled by such actuating devices, consisting of air-pump X, piston-cylinder N, spring-controlled piston N and water-valve V, V; the same being constructed, combined and operating, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
