EMBossING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,197, dated December 1, 1896.

Beit known that I, EDWARD S. DE TAM- BLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Embossing-Machines, of which the following is a specifica tion.
The object of my said invention is to provide a means whereby an embossing-machine may be employed to ornament curved or circular wooden structures, such as bicyclewheel rims, mud-guards, &c.
An embossing-machine provided with attachments embodying my said invention will be first fully described and the novel features thereof then pointed out in the claims.

which are made a part hereof and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure l is a perspective view of suchan embossing-machine; Fig. 2, a central vertical sectional view of the upper end thereof, and Fig. 3 a detail sectional view on the dotted line 3 3 in Fig. 2.
In said drawings the portions marked A represent the frame of the machine; B, the main roll-carrying shaft; C, the 'embossingroll or die-spindle; D, the burner therein, and E a guide-supporting shaft or rod.
The frame A is a strong, heavy frame suitably arranged to carry the mechanism, and is preferably mainly in the form of heavy castings, as shown. l
The shaft B is mounted in bearings in the heavy vertically-adjustable frame B', which is mounted in ways in the sides of the frame A, and at the upper end extends out into substantially the form `of a table, but with an open upper side. This vertically-adj ustable frame or table is adapted to be raised and lowered quickly to and from certain determinate positions by a rock-shaft 1, having cams 2 and operated by a hand-lever 3. Said cams 2 operate against the blocks 4, which are connected to the rods 5, the upper ends whereof are seated in sockets in the frame B. These rods 5 are screw-threaded and enter screw-threaded perforations in the blocks 4. They are provided with bevel-pinions 6,which engage with corresponding pinions '7 on J[he shaft 8. By this means these rods 5 may be simultaneously revolved and thus the distance between theblocks 4. andthe frame B adjusted. I have shown a sprocketfwheel 9, having a sprocket-chain l0, (running to a suitable hand-operated shaft, not showin) as a means for revolving this shaft; but obviously the sprocket-wheel. 9 might be a plain handwheel and the shaft 8 thus operated directly by hand or any other suitable means for the purpose employed. Said shaft B bears the various disks b, b', and h2, which serve to support the wooden pieces being embossed while the embossing operation is in progress. I have shown three of thevdisks h, three of the disks ZJ', and one disk h2; but obviously any desired number may be employed. These disks are shown as separated by washers and y held in place on the shaft I3 by suitable collars.
The spindle C is hollow and carries the embossing disks or dies c, c,and c2, which correspond to the companion disks b, h', and b2 and which are engraved on their peripheral surfaces with the figures desired to be embossed on the wood. Said disks are separated by washers and secured upon the spindle in the same manner that the corresponding disks are separated and secured upon the shaft B. This spindle is supported by heavy rollerbearings at each end and comes directly in contact with the rollers C', forming the operative part of said bearings.
The burner D is a tubular burner and eX- tends within the opening in the spindle C. Securely attached to the outer end of this burner is the cap D', which rests immediately within the extreme outer end of the spindle C and is adapted to support the burner, although it is not fastened to said spindle, and is consequently capable of remaining in its position while the spindle revolves. Said cap D has anumber of fine perforations surrounding the opening, by which the burner D is coupled thereto for the admission of air, and the spindle C is provided with perforations at the other end of the burner, as shown in Fig. 2, for the escape of I[he products of combustion. A neck or elbow D2 is connected to the cap D', and to this in turn is connected a flexible tube or hose D3, which leads to a IOC mixer D4, to which the gas-pipe D5 leads, whereby the fuel-gas, which I prefer to use with this maehinefis suppliedthereto.
The shaft or rod E is mounted in bearings e on standards E on the frame A. These standards are slotted and the bearings are thus rendered adjustable, as plainly shown, so as to accommodate the guides to Work of different size. Upon the outer end ofthis shaft or rod are the guide-rollers E2, which engage with and support the bicyclerims while being embossed.
In the machine as illustrated the provision is made for the embossing of three Wheelguards X, three Wheel-rims Y, and one chainguard Z. The Wheel-guards X, being in the form o f strips, although somewhat curved, may peras. By the machine shown I find that Iv am enabled to satisfactorily.emboss these thin Wooden parts, which have not heretofore been capable of being successfully provided with ornamentation of this character. Manifestly, from the nature of the structures to be so operated upon, ythe embossing must not be deep, and consequently the spindle and shaft may extend outside the bearings by which they are supported and still have sufficient strength and rigidity to perform'the Work.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
