TRANSOM -ADJUSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,386, dated November 17, 1896.
Application filed February 20, T896. Serial No. 580,042, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO NEWMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and and useful Improvements in Transom-Adj usters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to devices for adj usting the transoms of doors, and the object thereof is to provide an effective device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is adapted to operate in connection with a hinged transom; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the fol-. lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a front view of a portion of a door-frame, showing also a transom and my improved adj usting mechanism, a part of the latter being shown in section; and Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, A represents a portion of the frame of a door, and B a transom which is hinged at the lower side, as shown at b, and in the practice of my invention I provide means for adjusting the transom or for opening the same and holding it open at any desired an gle or inclination, which consists of a vertically movable rod D, which is connected with the side of the door-frame by keepers d. The upper keeper (1 is preferably arranged opposite the end of the transom and is provided with a shoulder or projection (1 through which the vertically-movable rod G passes, and said shoulder is provided with a hook or projection 61 at each side thereof, with each of which is connected a spring E, and the lower ends of thesprings E are connected with the tubular head F, which is mounted. on the rodD and which is free to turn thereon, said tubular head Fbeing prevented from longitudinal movement by annular shoulders F which are formed on or secured to the rod D.
The tubular head F is provided with an arm G, which is pivotally connected with a crank lever g, which extends upwardly and the shorter end of which passes through a keeper H, which is secured to the frame of the transom, and the lower keeper d, through which the lower end of the rod D passes, is provided with a tubular head K, in which is formed an oblong slot 7c, at one side of which are formed radial slots W, and said lower end of the rod D is provided with a handle L and also with a pin or projection l\l,which is secured thereto or formed thereon at a predetermined distance above the handle and which is adapted to operate in the slots 7tand The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
lVhenever it is desired to open the transom, the rod D is pulled downwardly and the transom B is opened on its hinges b, and by turning the rod D the pin or projection M will enter one of the radial slots 76 and thus securely hold the transom in the desired position. Vhen it is desired to close the transom, the rod D is again turned so that the pin or projection M will pass upwardly through the longitudinal slot is, and the rod D will be drawn upwardly by the springs E.
It will be understood that the tubular head K may be of any desired length and any preferred number of the radial slots k may be employed, and I thus provide means for opening the transom to any desired extent and for holding it in any desired position.
This device is simple in construction and operation and is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it is evident that changes therein and modifications thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations in and modifications of the construction herein described Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent Thecombination with a door-frame, of a transom which is hinged at one side and means for opening the same, and for holding it in any desired position, which consists of a vertically-movable rod which passes through keepers secured to the side of the door-frame,
said rod being provided with a tubular head which is mounted thereon, and with which is connected a crank-lever, one arm of which passes through a keeper secured to said transom, and means for operating said verticallymovable rod,which consists of a tubular bearing formed on one of the keepers by which it is connected with the frame, and springs 0011- nected with the upper keeper, and with the' my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 18th day of February, 1896.
