SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,360, dated November 17, 1896.

hereby declare that the following is a full,

clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention has for its object to provide a simple, economical, and efficient sash-fastener that will operate, when in position for use, to brace one sash against another, so that neither can be pried open, and which cannot be unlocked from outside the windowby any ordinary instrument or tool. Therefore said invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts here inafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings,and subsequently claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents an elevation of my fastener, partly in section, applied to window-sash, the latter being shown wholly in section; Fig. 2, a plan view, partly in horizontal section,of the fastener and sash; and Fig. 3, a detail front elevation of a pivotal bar constituting part of said fastener.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a plate for attachment to alower-sash top rail B by screws 1) or other suitable means, and it may be preferable in some instances to provide the plate with a depending tenon c for engagement with a corresponding mortise cut in said top rail of the sash.

The plate A is formed with parallel ears d and a lug 6 upon its upper side. A pin f, connecting the plate-ears, serves as a pivot for a bar C, having a longitudinal slot g therein adjacent to its lower end. 'A thumb-screw D engages a tapped opening in the lugeof plate A, and has a reduced non-threaded inner por-' tion that engages with the slot g in the aforesaid pivotal bar. By having the threaded and non-threaded portions of the screw differential in the matter of diameters I provide a shoulder h in opposition to one side of the pivotal bar C, and the inner extremity of said screw is upset to form a flange 2', in opposition to the other side of said bar. In view of the foregoing it will be understood that ad j ustment of screw D in either direction will cause a corresponding movement of bar C on its pivot, the slot in said bar being provided in order that this movement may be accomplished.

Secured to an upper-sash stile E by screws j or other suitable means is another plate F, preferably provided with a tenon 7:, extending from its inner side for engagement with a corresponding mortise in said stile. The latter plate is provided with a lug on, extending from its outer side, and the lower face of this lug and opposing end of pivotal bar are beveled on the same angle.

In practice the screw D is adjusted to swing the bar C against the under face by lug m on plate F, and thus the sash are braced against each other to prevent either of them from be ing pried open, and. it is obvious that when said sash are thus secured the fastener can-.

not be unlocked from outside the window by any ordinary instrument or tool, as it requires reverse adjustment of said screw to bring said bar out of the way of the plate-lug m aforesaid.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A sash-fastener comprising a plate, a longitudinally-slotted brace-bar in pivotal connection with the plate, a screw adjustablein a plate-lug and having a non-threaded shouldered and flanged portion engaged with the bar-slot, and another plate having a lug that opposes said bar when the fastener is in working position.
