LASTING MACHINE.

FRANK CHASE, OF WATERVILLE, MAINE, ASSIGNOR TO THE CHASE LAST- ING MACHINE COMPANY, OF PORTLAND, MAINE, AND BOSTON, MAS- SACHUSETTS..
LASTING-MACHIN'E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,389, dated November 17, 1896.
Application filed October 16, 1895. Serial No. 565,910. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK CHASE, of Waterville, inthe county of Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lasting-lVIachines, of which the following is a speciiication.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of a sidewise-tiltable carriage provided with my new carriage-lock. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a sideWise-tiltable carriage provided with my new lock.
The object of my invention is to simplify V the construction and manipulation and to increase the speed of lasting-machines.
My invention, although shown embodied in a Chase lasting-machine,is applicable in other makes of lasting-machinesA My invention consists in the combination or" a sidewise-tilting carriage with a lock to prevent it from tilting when so desired.
The end carriages 11 and 12 are each tiltable sidewise on their respective longitudinal pivots 17 l and 18*. It is frequently desirable in practice to lock one or both the sidewisetiltable carriages in a nonsideWise-tiltable position. To that end I provide a lock which is frequently formed by extending the usual cross-shaft 19 beyond its side bearings 20 and mounting on the projection ends arms 21, which are readily swung upwardly to bring their free ends into engagement with the under side of the carriage and to prevent the carriage from tilting on either or both sides, as may be desired.
In practice it is not required to tilt the car- 3 5 riage sidewise in one direction only, and I consequently make botharms 21 fast on their shaft, which is free to rock in its bearings 20, so that when one arm is turned up or down the other arm is carried with it.' 4o
It will be plain that various forms of locking devices may be employed to keep the sidewise-tiltable carriages from tipping sidewise, and I do not wish to be understood as limiting this feature of my invention to my 45 specific construction.'
What I claim is- In a lasting-machine, the combination of a sidewise-tiltable carriage with a pair of swinging locking-arms, one for each side of the 5o carriagesubstantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 27 th day of 5 5 September, A. D. 1895.
FRANK CHASE.
