Description

Patented NovfS, 1896.
INVENTODR WITNESSES:
ATTORN EYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES DETRIOK, OF KINGS FERRY, NEWV YORK.
COMBINED CARPET-STRETCHER AND TACK-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,463, dated November 3, 1896. Application filed April 11,1896.- Serial No. 587,096. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES DETRIOK, of Kings Ferry, in the county of Cayuga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Carpet- Stretcher and Tack-Holder, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to carpet-stretchers and tack-holders combined.
The object of my invention is to produce an implement which will hold a tack ready for driving at the same time that the carpet is being stretched.
My invention consists in the several novel features of construction, and operation hereinafter described, and which are specifically set forth in the claim hereunto annexed. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing a tack between or gripped by the jaws.
The principal member comprises a body 2, having a handle 3 on one end and a head 4, provided with a jaw 5, upon the other, said jaw having a vertical groove 6. The central portion of the end of the body 2 is recessed, as shown, and the jaw 5 projects horizontally outward into the recess, as shown, so as to form a means, in connection with the end of the jaw 8, for holding a tack in position ready to be driven while the carpet is being stretched. By having the jaw project into the recess the tack to be driven is held at a convenient distance between the two holdingpoints 10. The head is shown as provided with two jaws, but it is evident that one may be omitted. The other member is a lever comprising a body 7, provided with a jaw 8, having a groove 9, and a shank extending substantially up to the handle, so as to be convenient for operation by a finger or thumb of the operator. The swinging of said lever one Way closes the movable jaw upon the stationary one, gripping the body of a tack a placed between them and holding it so that when the teeth 10 in the head are caught into the carpet and'strain is applied to the handle said carpet is stretched up to a base-board, and then by a blow of a hammer the tack is driven, the jaws being opened at the proper time to let go of the tack after its point has entered the floor, the teeth in the meantime holding the carpet until the tack is wholly or substantially driven.
The body is curved substantially as shown in order to throw or raise the handle up into a plane above the head and raise the hand of the operator away from the carpet.
The shoulder 11 prevents the hand from slipping forward over the lever to prevent its operation.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A carpet-stretcher and tack-holder consisting of a handle having a head at one end provided with a downwardly-projecting point for stretching the carpet and a central recess, a jaw 5, projecting into the recess from one side of the head, and having a semicircular aperture in its face, a lever pivoted to the head and having a curved jaw for bearing against the jaw 5, and provided with a corresponding aperture to hold a tack, the arm of the lever extending at the side of the handle, and a guard 11, projecting outward from the side of the handle for protecting the end of the lever-arm, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of March, 1896.
JAMES DETRIOK.
