T. SCHULZB.A TOOL FOR HOLDING:i PIPE NIPPLES.
No. 570.233. Patented-oct. 27, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Tl-IEODORE SCHULZE,
OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
TOOL FOR HOLDING PIPE-NIPPLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,233, dated October 27, 1896.
Application filed February 20,1896. Serial No. 580,001. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEoDoEE SCHULZE, of Neu7 York city, New York, have invented an Improved Tool for Holding Pipe-Nipples, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tool of simple construction for holding pipe-nipples while a thread is being cut upon them.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side View, partly in section, of my improved pipe-holding tool. Fig. 2 is an end View thereof.
My improved tool is composed of a squared stein a, which is enlarged at one or both ends to form the cylindrical head or heads c', which are made integral with the stem. Each head is provided with a threaded socket adapted to engage the threaded end of -a gas-pipe A. If tWo heads a are formed on the stem, the sockets should be of 4different diameters, so as to fit diflerently-sized pipes. Within each socket there is contained a threaded plug l), which is adapted to engage the thread of Ithe socket and which is screwed down so as to leave the length of the remaining opening equal about to the length of the threaded section of the pipe-nipple. The outer end of the plug b is provided With a central horn b', having a pointed end and a cylindrical body which is adapted to extend into and engage the inner side of the nipple. Around this horn is formed upon the plug an annular seat b2, equal in Width to the thickness of pipe to be cut.
In use the pipe A is screwed into the proper 3 5 head a', and then the squared stem a is clamped between the jaws of a vise, so that it will not turn. The exposed end of the pipe A is now attacked by the stock and die and a thread is cut upon it in the usual manner. During this operation the guide of the die Will be centered upon and gradually move over the head c', such head being made of a diameter to snugly t into the bore of the guide. While the thread is thus cut upon the outer end of the pipe, its inner end will be so held that it cannot revolve and also that its thread cannot become injured.
It Will be seen that with my tool threads can be quickly and conveniently cut upon any lengths of pipes and that the tool when forming part of a plumbers outfit Will greatly simplify his labors.
A tool for holding pipe-nipples composed of a squared stem, an integral cylindrical head having a threaded socket, and a plug having a threaded body that engages the threaded socket, said plug being provided with an annular pipe-seat and With a cylindrical horn that is adapted to engage the bore of the nipple, substantially as specified.
