Description

UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
HENRY P. BOYD, OF BELLEVUE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO GEORGE A. DIOKSON, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA. i
Roo CONNEQTIO N.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 569,995, dated October 27, 1896.
Application iled May ll, 1895. Serial No. 548,962. (No model.)
T0 all whom t man con/cern,.- p
Be it known that I, HENRY P. BOYD,of Bellevue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rod Connections, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which the figure is a side elevation, partly broken away, of a rod connection constructed in accordance with myinvention.
My invention relates to the connecting or coupling up of a series of rods for use as stayrods, oil-well connections, &c., and is designed to provide a connected series of rods which shall consist of but two different types of parts, the rods and correspondingly the sleeves being similar to each other.
In the drawing, 2 represents a couplingsleeve having at one end a hole 3 of about the same size as the rod, this hole leading into a larger` hole or cavity 4, which enlarged cavity receives the heads upon the opposite ends of the two adjacent rods. This larger cavity is screw-threaded for at least a portion of its length, and these screw-threads are engaged by similar screw-threads upon the exterior of a collar 5, which surrounds the rod adjacent to the head. In connecting up the rods, each of which is exactly similar in the connected series, I take a rod having a head at one end, and pushing the other end of this rod through the hole 3 in the coupling-sleeve the sleeve is slid down the rod a sufficient distance to allow the upsetting of this end of the rod into a head 6. The coupling-sleeve is then slid back until this head fits against the shoulder or offset in the sleeve, and the head 7 of the next rod in the series being pushed into the larger cavity the 4o collar 5, which is slipped over the rod, is screwed into place in the sleeve, thus giving a strong and secure connection for the rods. The sleeve may be provided with a squared portion, if desired, for the application of a wrench to turn the sleeve, and, if desired, a lug 8 may be used upon the sleeve for suspending the series of rods wherever they are used in oil-well connections and similar locations. -5`o The advantages of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, since by the use of two simple types of parts, namely, the series of rods, each similar to the other and each having the screw-threaded sleeve, and the series of coupling-sleeves, each similar to the other, a cheap and strong connected series of rods is obtained, thus doing away with the trouble of making and arranging several different types of parts.
I claim- A series of connected rods, each having at one end an integral enlarged head, an exteriorly-screw-threaded sleeve butting against the head, and engaging the larger innerlyscrew-threaded cavity of the coupling-sleeve, and its other end pushed through the smaller hole of the next similar sleeve and then upset so as to form a head of substantially the same size as the head at the other end, sub- 7o stantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
HENRY P. BOYD.
