W. J. JOHNSTGN.
GRAIN GAR DOOR.
Patented Oct. .20 I1896.
'UNITED STATES PATENTV OrFrCng-p W'ILLIAM J. JOHNSTON, OF PORT HURON, MICHIGAN.
GRAiN-OAR DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,923, dated October 20, 1896.
Application filed November l, 1895. Serial No. 567,643. A(Nominated.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. JOHNSTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Huron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Oar Doors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of refer ence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
his invention relates to car-door fixtures; and it consists in a system of parts'and features made and arranged substantially as set forth hereinafter, and as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l shows a View as from the inside of the car. Fig. 2 shows the door raised, taken from a point at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a view as from the outside of car. Fig. 4 shows a horizontal sectionseen from above. Fig. 5 shows a detail View.
The inside face of the car-door frame or stanchion on each side of the door is faced with metal plates. These metal facings are divided into two parts Aand A', with groove or slotway B between the parts and widening behind the facings in space C, so as to allow hooks or ears D and D', which hold the-door E in place, to move freely up and down in Opening and closing the door. Of these plate A extends a space beyond the end of plate A', as shown, A being so fastened to frame as to be slightly movable and allow va-- riation in width of slot B.
The door is formed of two parts hinged together securely, the upper part F folding down and inward on the lower part E, or the upper part F may be omitted. The lower part E has an gle-plates H upon the ends, with one face or edge bent around the end and projecting beyond, so as to enter the slotway B. At the top of this face is the hook or ear D, bent outward, and near thebottom is the hook or ear D, bent inward, the purpose of these ears being to catch back of the plates A and f and hold the doors securely in place and, with the projecting edge of the angle-plate I-I running in the slot B, guide the door up and down. This part E has metal plate orangle-plate R at bottom edge to protect the bottom of the door, and also han: dles S on outside of door to assist in raising it.
The angle-plates II have near the top,` middle, and bottom three, or more or less, lugs projecting through the door and parallel with the extending edge of I-I, forming a bearing 6o with the projecting edge for shaft ot' rollers K, which enable the door to be easily raised when load is pressing against it from the inside. These rollers and the hooks or ears may be, if desired, on separate parts and the y angle-plates partly or wholly omitted.
The part E has staples G or arms at its ends on the upper corners, as shown. The door-frame has dependent hooks L at the top over the plate A to catch and hold staples 7o G and prevent part E from getting out vof frame and to hold part E when swung out and hung up, as shown in Fig. 2. PartE has sliding bolts M on its outer face, arranged in bearings to fasten or lock the door,7 5 in place.
There are dependent hooks N from the car-roof to hold up the lower edge of the door when it is open and swung up on hooks L and staples G.
At the point in slot B where the hook or ear D reaches when the door is hung on hooks L there is a notch or opening O in plate A through which the hook D can pass.
At the bottom of the door-frames there is a notch or widening of slot B, so as to facilitate the cleaning of grain or other matter from the slot.
When the door is to be opened, it is raised up and the top part F folded back and in on 9o part E. Then part E is pushed up until hooks D escape from the slotway above plate A, when it is pushed inward at the top, so as to bring the staples G into hooks L. Then the lower edge of part E is drawn out, the hooks D passing through notch O and hung on hook N from the roof. The door is shut by reversing this operation.
Various modifications may be made.
l. In a grain-car a shutter having a single metal plate on its end bent so as to cover the inner face of the ends of the shutter-timbers and bind them together, and to project into IOO a slotway in the door-jamb, and bent to one side within such slot to hold the shutter to the jam'b, all substantially as set forth.
In a grain-car, the combination with the jambs, metallic slotted guides on their inner faces, having nea-r the middle and at the top, cut-away portions, of doors having a iiange at the edge entering said slot, and hooks on this flange within the slot, bails on the door, and hooks at the top with which said bails are adapted to engage7 the flange -hooks, when the door is suspended, being opposite the cut-away portions.
f3. 1n a grain-car, the combination with the jalnbs, metallic slotted guides on their inner faces, a door having outwardly-projecting flanges on its edges, with means for preventing detachment except at its upper point, a hinged section at the top of the door, corresponding flanges on this section adapted to enter the slotted guides, and bolts on the door adapted to enter apertures in the j ambs.
l. In a grain-car the combination of ashutter-section having ears at the top and bottom bent to the opposite sides, with door-jambs having meta-l guards with a slotway between arranged to engage with such ears to the jamb which is Within and hold the shutter in place while free to run up and doi'rn and having a space cut out on one side of such slotway at a point arranged so the ear at the bottom can be drawn out inward from the slot to open the door, While the ear at the top of the shutter projecting to the opposite side will pass such point without liability to escape from the slot, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with the door-jambs, a vertical slotted guide therein, ahooked fian ge on the end of the door engaging the slot, and friction-rollers for the door on that portion of hidden or protected by the liange, for the purpose speciied.
6. The combination with the doorjambs having guideways of a door, a roller-bearing, and a guard for said roller carried by the doors to keep them free from the grain at all points of movement.
In testimony Whereoil I alix my si gnature in presence of two Witnesses.
